Uppsala combines important evidence of ecclesiastical, university and royal history with publicly accessible museums. The treasury of Uppsala Cathedral displays a medieval ceremonial garment, Renaissance robes, royal burial regalia and Gustav Vasa’s sword. Services are held daily at Uppsala Cathedral; at the same time, it is known as a burial church for members of the royal family, the nobility and the academic community. Thus, daily services, the treasury and its function as a burial church come together in a single historic building.

The Gustavianum is the oldest surviving building of Uppsala University. Under the direction of Olof Rudbeck the Elder, an anatomical theatre was established there between 1662 and 1663. Since 1997, the Gustavianum has been a publicly accessible museum with the university’s cultural history collections presented in permanent and temporary exhibitions. The building therefore combines its university history with a present-day public museum function.

History

Uppsala Castle was begun by Gustav Vasa in the 1540s. Today, the castle is the residence of the county governor and houses museums as well as other institutions. Since 2004, the public has been able to visit the original Vasa fortress and the impressive ruins of Uppsala Castle. This means that the site brings together its origins as a Vasa fortress, its present-day residential function and its accessible historic remains.

Art and museums

Uppsala Art Museum is located in Uppsala Castle in the centre of Uppsala. It presents modern and contemporary art across three floors and offers concerts, family activities and guided tours. Visual art, events and guided educational activities are therefore among the different cultural forms that come together in the castle.

Upplandsmuseet is a cultural history museum in the centre of Uppsala. Its exhibitions are housed in Akademikvarnen, an 18th-century building on the Fyrisån river designated as being of cultural and historical importance. The museum offers children a dedicated exhibition entitled “Lilla kvarn”.

Nature and trails

The Stadsskogen nature reserve in Uppsala consists mainly of coniferous forest. In the north there are rocky areas dominated by pine trees, while strips of swamp forest can be found in the south and southwest. The same protected area thus features a transition between forest, rocky terrain and wetter sections of woodland. These landscape forms all lie within the nature reserve and shape its different sections.

Directly west of Uppsala Castle lie the Baroque Garden, the Kitchen Garden, the Tropical Greenhouse and the Linneanum Orangery; they are open year-round. Eriksleden is named after the procession in which the relics of Saint Erik were once carried.

Uppsala Cathedral can be reached from Uppsala Central Station via a walking route of approximately 1 kilometre in around 15 minutes. At Uppsala Saluhall, visitors can buy locally produced food and selected delicacies.
