Holiday Apartment in Runmarö – Nature, Culture and the Archipelago

Runmarö combines the vastness of the archipelago with an exceptional variety of plants, traces of history and a culture that is deeply rooted in the landscape. Between lakes, open pastures and historic buildings are paths, landmarks and memories that give the island its distinctive character.

Nature

Runmarö has nine lakes of different sizes and is considered one of the archipelago’s most botanically valuable areas. More than half of Sweden’s 40 orchid species have been found on the island. The natural landscape also includes the Purren wetland, which has been included in Sweden’s national peatland protection plan. A section of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail passes through open pastures. Several sections of this trail on Runmarö are accessible to prams, wheelchairs and people with reduced mobility.

Trails and Views

At some points along the cultural trails, information boards provide details about the local culture and nature. From Telegrafberget, the view extends towards Stockholm and across the archipelago. The name of the hill recalls an optical telegraph station that once stood there. In 1808, the optical telegraph line to Korsö ran via Söderby, and thus over Telegrafberget on Runmarö.

Culture and History

The Runmarö branch of the Skärgårdsmuseet is based on items from the collection of Runmarö resident Hans Öhlin. Services are regularly held at Runmarö Chapel during the summer. The chapel was inaugurated in 1973 by the then Contract Provost Karl Gustaf Rinder; a large window serves as the altarpiece.

In Södersunda stands Boatswain’s Cottage No. 95, one of the best-preserved boatswain’s cottages in Sweden. Its oldest section was built as early as 1672. The Rasmus i Wintergata croft also dates back a long way: it is mentioned in the oldest tax register from 1637. Another link to cultural history is August Strindberg (1849–1912), who spent three summers on Runmarö.

Runmaröspelet presents a chapter of Runmarö’s history and has been listed as an annual summer production since 2010. The island therefore brings together historic buildings, the history of personal collections, religious culture and theatrical interpretations of history.

Things to Do

Solberga Gård has a kayak rental service. Running events are also part of the island’s public life: RUNmarö is an annual running event with three routes around the island. The RUNmarö half marathon is a route of approximately 21 km around Runmarö.

Getting There

The boat trip from Stavsnäs to Runmarö takes about ten minutes. Boats to Runmarö operate year-round. Runmarö Hembygdsgård is about 2 km on foot from the landing stage.
