Holiday apartment in Möja: Trails, nature and island culture

Möja is a traditional archipelago island with small villages and well-preserved harbours. Fishing is still practised on the island. Nature and trails

A section of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail runs across Möja. The Möja section leads from Långvik to Hamn and follows a gravel road. A nature trail on Möja runs between the villages of Hamn in the west and Ramsmora in the east, through the Björndalen Nature Reserve.

The Möja-Björndalen Nature Reserve offers mushroom excursions and long shoreline walks. It includes old, unmanaged forest, marshland and rocky areas. The nature reserve can be reached by archipelago boat as far as the Dragedet pier. Möja is recommended for hiking and cycling; there are bicycle rental services in the north and south of the island.

There are several natural bathing spots on Möja, on rocks and beaches. The island has no official bathing area.

Island life

The villages and harbours shape Möja’s character. In addition to the year-round establishments in Berg, the summer bakery and summer restaurants are part of the main village’s seasonal offering. The steamship pier and the guest harbour with a toilet and water complement the facilities by the water. Fishing, which is still practised, remains part of everyday island life.

Culture and history

Möja Church was built in 1768 by master builder Carl Örn. A votive ship hangs in its chancel. Möja Church can be reached by boat from Sollenkroka, Boda or Strömkajen. In Berg, the Möja local heritage museum displays older objects from the archipelago. The Roland Svensson Museum shows the artist’s former studio and several of his works; it is located by the pier in Ramsmora.

Möja’s dance pavilion is the oldest dance pavilion still in operation in the Stockholm archipelago. Every year, it hosts music events, dancing, cinema screenings and markets. Visitors can use the three boules courts at the dance pavilion when they are not needed by the club members.

Festivals and gatherings

Midsummer celebrations are held in the meadows in the villages of Löka and Ramsmora, and everyone is welcome to participate. Sweden’s National Day is celebrated at Möja’s dance pavilion with a boules festival, a picnic, music and other festivities.
