Holiday apartment in Upplands-Bro: Nature, Trails and Culture

Upplands-Bro combines protected landscapes, varied trails and archaeological traces. Among ancient forests, grazed meadows, lakes and historic sites, the range of activities extends from nature observation and hiking to cycling, winter activities and culture. Access to several areas is also described specifically: bus routes, rail connections and connecting footpaths lead to different starting points.

Nature

The Broängarna Nature Reserve is home to 233 observed bird species, a birdwatching tower and a three-kilometre nature and cultural trail. Bus route 555 serves the area; its stops are approximately 500 to 1,100 metres from the nature reserve. The Lejondal Nature Reserve has grazed meadows and old forest, as well as berries, mushrooms and wild animals. From Bro railway station, a bus connection leads to the Rosendal stop, followed by access via an approximately two-kilometre footpath.

The Rösaringsåsen Nature Reserve is a Natura 2000 site with rare plants and insects. At the same time, it preserves Bronze Age and Iron Age remains, including burial grounds, a 500-metre processional route and several stone-edged labyrinths. The access can be divided into separate sections by taking the bus to Låssa kyrka and then following an approximately 1.6-kilometre footpath to the reserve’s car park. Stäketskogen protects a very old, primeval-forest-like woodland with endangered insects, wood-decay fungi and glacial moraine ridges. In the Stäketskogen Nature Reserve, a yellow-marked trail leads to a viewpoint above the railway tunnel, where there is a bench. To reach it, take the commuter train to Kungsängen railway station and then follow an approximately one-kilometre footpath to Dalkarlsbacken.

Trails

For longer tours, the Låssaleden is located on Låssalandet: the hiking trail is 13.5 kilometres long in total. The Upplands-Broleden is 29 kilometres long and runs through grazed pastures, along attractive gravel roads and through rocky pine forests with lake views, for hiking or cycling. Its orange-marked hiking section passes through the Lejondal, Stäketskogen, Frölunda and Broängarna nature reserves. Signs along the trail provide information about Bronze Age stone cairn burials, the construction of old roads and Stäket Castle.

The Lennartsnäs peninsula has 35 kilometres of marked riding trails. The Mälardalsleden is one of Sweden’s oldest cycle touring routes. This provides a range of trail lengths and types, from the 13.5-kilometre hiking trail to the 29-kilometre route for hiking or cycling.

Culture

Rösaring is an archaeological attraction with a Viking Age processional route, burial mounds, stone cairns and a large stone labyrinth. The archaeological site is located on a 60-metre-high gravel ridge overlooking Lake Mälaren. At Rösaring there is a car park, an information board and the start of a hiking trail across the gravel ridge to the labyrinth. Stäksön is also home to Almare-Stäket, Sweden’s largest medieval castle ruin.

The Road Museum on Stäksön displays examples of roads from the 17th and 19th centuries. Bro kyrka–Husby–Assurstenen is designated as a cultural site; information boards are located on site. Thus, archaeological sites, historic transport routes and designated cultural sites occur side by side in Upplands-Bro in various forms.

Activities

At Hällkana, Accropark Bro offers a high-ropes course with several courses at different heights and difficulty levels. Lillsjön has an 18-basket disc golf course where Brunna Frisbeeklubb trains and holds competitions. Lillsjön beach also has an underwater snorkelling trail with eight information boards at a depth of one to three metres.

At Hällkana beach on Lake Lejondalssjön, there are bathing jetties, several barbecue areas and an accessible barbecue shelter. At Hällkana, canoes can be rented for paddling tours on Lake Lejondalssjön when a club or school rents the leisure centre. The Lejondal Nature Reserve also has an ice-skating loop prepared in winter and groomed ski trails. Anyone may use a wind shelter in the nature reserve for overnight stays outdoors.

Annual Events

The Funkisfestivalen takes place in Upplands-Bro every January.
