Discover Hökön: Nature and Village History
Accommodation in Hökön
Hökön is a family-friendly settlement in the northern part of Osby Municipality, close to the border with Kronoberg County. The village combines nature observation, railway history and local gatherings in a way that allows for a variety of holiday experiences. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Hökön can therefore plan their stay according to their own interests: spending time outdoors, discovering traces of the past or incorporating a market date into their trip.
Nature Reserves with Different Visitor Experiences
Just 1.5 kilometres north of Hökön lies Tyringemossen, a 28-hectare nature reserve. Capercaillie, black grouse, hazel grouse, black woodpecker, short-eared owl, pygmy owl and boreal owl continue to be spotted in and around the reserve. For visitors interested in birdwatching and peatland landscapes, this natural area therefore offers a particular thematic focus.
When planning your day, however, it is important to note a key distinction: Tyringemossen itself has no hiking trails or roads that make the area easily accessible. The situation is different at Vakö myr. The nature reserve near Låkan offers boardwalks and viewpoints. It can be reached from the public road between Hökön and Fanhult via a forest track located approximately 400 metres east of the peatland. This allows two nature destinations with different conditions to be included in your travel plans without treating them as equivalent.
Railways and Preserved Village Heritage
Railway history is also part of Hökön’s character. The SOEJ line, whose full name is Sölvesborg-Olofström-Elmhults järnväg, opened in 1901, and a station was built in Hökön. The railway station from the 1910s has been preserved. Opposite it stands a wooden house dating from around the turn of the century, which was formerly used as a shop. Those interested in historic buildings and regional transport history will find tangible points of interest here within the village itself.
The SOEJ railway line is still used for freight traffic. As a result, historic railway facilities and the continued use of the line meet in this location. In addition, a working group documented the school’s activities from 1921 to 1973 as part of “Boken om Hököns skola”. This school history broadens the perspective beyond individual buildings to include the settlement’s former everyday life.
Markets, Social Encounters and Shared Activities
Hökön’s market and flea market take place every year, usually on the first Sunday in July. At the summer market and flea market announced for 2026, coffee with waffles and sausages in bread were served. This information makes the market an appealing specific reason to visit, without defining the annual offering beyond this event.
An orienteering walk with questions for adults and children was also held at Hökön School. At an initial gathering entitled “Social Gemenskap”, Reymond Olsson spoke about his own beekeeping operation, which he has maintained for many years, his knowledge of beekeeping and the important role of bees in nature. For families, events like these can offer another way to get to know a place: not only through its landscape and buildings, but also through community topics and local interests.
Which Holiday Apartment Suits Your Travel Plans
When looking for a holiday apartment in Hökön, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your holiday. For days spent in nature, the different conditions at Tyringemossen and Vakö myr are relevant. For cultural and historical interests, the railway station, wooden house and documented school history offer specific discoveries. Those wishing to tie their stay to a local event can take the annual market and flea market into consideration. Hökön is therefore suitable as a destination for a trip that combines nature, village history and shared experiences.
