Kristianstad combines experiences of nature with an unusually vivid urban history. Around Naturum Vattenriket, the Årummet nature reserve and the historic buildings in the city centre, there are various options for planning your trip. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can therefore choose a focus according to their own interests: wetlands and trails, museums and art, or traces of the former fortress town.

Nature in Årummet and the Biosphere Reserve

Naturum Vattenriket is the gateway to the Kristianstad Vattenrike Biosphere Reserve. There, visitors can explore an exhibition and take a ride on the Opteryx. The Årummet nature reserve is located close to the centre of Kristianstad; Naturum Vattenriket is also situated in this area. A viewing hide at the Årummet outdoor museum offers views of the wetlands and the city. This allows a stay in Kristianstad to be complemented by nature observation and landscape experiences, without the trip being limited exclusively to one theme.

The Linnérundan runs along Årummet and offers another way to experience the area on foot. For planning your day, it is useful to decide on your preferred focus in advance: should the time be devoted mainly to the landscape, an exhibition or the city's historic sights? The various destinations can thus be incorporated into an individual itinerary.

Museums, Art and the History of the City

At Regionmuseet Kristianstad, you can visit permanent exhibitions on the history of Kristianstad and the landscapes of Skåne through the ages. The museum also presents several temporary exhibitions throughout the year. The Kristianstad Konsthall is located in the same building and presents contemporary Swedish and international art in several exhibitions each year. This brings historical themes and changing art exhibitions together in one cultural venue.

Filmmuseet also has its own distinctive focus. The exhibition is dedicated to events and personalities in Kristianstad that shaped the early development of feature films. At Järnvägsmuseet Kristianstad, visitors can learn about railway history, earlier eras of train travel and historic railway environments. The museum opened at the former Kristianstad Södra railway station. Those interested in different forms of urban and technological history will therefore find several distinct ways to explore the past.

Fortress Town and Historic Buildings

Heliga Trefaldighets kyrka was built from 1618 to 1628 and consecrated on 8 June 1628. It is an example of the architectural style of Christian IV and has essentially preserved its interior and exterior appearance from its consecration in 1628. The fortification plan of Kristianstad, which encompassed the entire central city, can still be recognised in today's urban layout and itself constitutes a historic monument.

Norreport and Fyrkappan also form part of the historical orientation. Norreport was originally part of the city fortifications and marked the northern boundary of the city. Fyrkappan originally served as a guardroom at Kristianstad's northern city gate, Norreport, and was built in 1801. Norra kasern was built between 1754 and 1768 and is well preserved both outside and inside. It has Sweden's only completely preserved room layout based on the so-called block system. Such details make the city's history tangible during a walk, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single museum.

Park, Trails and Travel Ideas with Children

Tivoliparken was established in the first half of the 19th century. The area between the western side of the fortress town and the Helge å, which had previously been flooded at times, was gradually planted with trees and laid out as a promenade area for the city's residents. Today, it contains many unusual tree species as well as several old and large trees. Several path systems run through the park. The large themed Väsenlekplatsen playground is also located in the north-eastern part. For a trip with children, the park can therefore form a programme item of its own alongside museums, nature and historic buildings.

Cycling through the Landscapes of Skåne

Kristianstadsturen is a nature-oriented cycling tour that begins in the centre of Kristianstad and follows quiet roads through the landscapes of Skåne. From this tour, it is possible to make a detour across the bridge over the Helge å to Naturum Vattenriket. When choosing a holiday apartment in Kristianstad, you can therefore consider whether cultural destinations in the city, nature in Årummet or a cycling tour through the countryside should form the main focus of your stay.
