Tjörnarp – Hiking between the Lake and Nature Reserves
Accommodation in Tjörnarp
Hiking, Lake and Nature in Tjörnarp
Tjörnarp combines varied hiking trails with Lake Tjörnarpssjön, wetlands and a remarkable history. The area is particularly interesting when choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home if you enjoy spending your days combining active pursuits, nature observation and cultural discoveries. Tjörnarp’s hiking trails are accessible by the Pågatåg, so you can also plan your starting point without relying exclusively on travelling by car.
The marked circular trails offer a clearly distinguishable selection. The red-marked Tjörnarpssjön runt is 5.8 km long; most of it runs outside the Prästabonnaskogen Nature Reserve. The green-marked Bokskogsrundan covers 3 km and partly runs outside the same nature reserve. If you would like a longer loop with a focus on brickworks, you can consider the blue-marked Tegelbruksrundan, with a total length of 4.7 km. Part of this trail runs through the Tegeldammarna-Lergravarna Nature Reserve. In addition, a 3 km connecting trail leads north from Prästabonnaskogen to the Skåneleden SL2, Stage 6, in a north–south direction.
Nature Reserves and Water Experiences
Prästabonnaskogen lies between Lake Tjörnarpssjön, the church and the railway station in Tjörnarp. In the western part, below Tjörnarps kyrka, there is a landscaped wetland with an observation platform. This allows you to add a fixed observation point to a hike. The Tegeldammarna-Lergravarna Nature Reserve consists largely of wet woodland with a high proportion of dead wood, as well as a rich variety of bird and insect life. In Höör Municipality, the municipal nature reserve also includes the former clay pit, which once belonged to Gunnarps bruk.
There are fishing jetties at Lake Tjörnarpssjön. Three rowing boats can be rented from the sellers of fishing permits based in Tjörnarp. The bathing area at the lake is within walking distance of Tjörnarp railway station and has bathing piers, rescue equipment, a toilet, waste disposal facilities and an information board providing details including bathing water quality. When looking for accommodation, this allows you to weigh up whether your trip should focus primarily on hiking loops, fishing or spending time by the water.
Historic Sites and Brickmaking
Gunnarps tegelbruk is a site open to visitors, with information boards about the brickworks. The restored ring kiln at Gunnarp was restored in 1993–94, has 18 firing chambers and arched passageways lined with bricks. The site thus offers a tangible insight into the history of local brickmaking, without the visit having to be limited to a simple hike.
There are also traces of history around the church. Ruins of Tjörnarp’s church, dating from the 12th century, remain at the old church site, approximately 300 metres from the present-day church. A few hundred metres east of Tjörnarps kyrka there are also stone settings that probably date from the later Iron Age. Those choosing a holiday apartment in Tjörnarp can include nature trails and such cultural and historical sites in their daily plans.
Guidance for Your Accommodation Search
The different trail lengths make it easier to plan a trip with varying levels of activity: at 3 km, the Bokskogsrundan offers a shorter circular trail, while the 4.7 km Tegelbruksrundan and the 5.8 km Tjörnarpssjön runt provide different focal points. For further orientation in the same area, you can also view Höör and Ludvigsborg. In Tjörnarp itself, your accommodation search will primarily depend on whether your trip is to focus more strongly on hiking, lake experiences, nature observation or regional history.
