Höör: Hiking, Culture and Trails through Stenskogen
Accommodation in Höör
Höör combines varied hiking trails with a remarkable cultural history. Between the town centre, the railway station and the surrounding landscapes, you will find short paths, longer routes and historic sites that give your trip different focal points. A holiday apartment in Höör is therefore particularly appealing if you do not want to plan nature experiences and culture separately.
Hiking between Höör and Stenskogen
A vivid introduction to the landscape is provided by Brottets bana. The hiking trail is about 3 kilometres long, easy to moderately difficult, and runs between Höörs Mölla and Stanstorps stenbrott in Stenskogen. At selected points, information boards with maps and historical explanations provide information about the surrounding area. A map brochure is also available in a letterbox near Höörs Mölla.
Stenskogen is not only a hiking area but is also connected with the local history of craftsmanship: sandstone has been quarried there since the 12th century for making building blocks and millstones. Those who prefer a longer route can plan the 16-kilometre Pilgrimsleden. It begins at Frihetens kapell near Stiftsgården Åkersberg in Höör. The two Skåneleden routes SL2 and SL3 run parallel through the town centre and pass the railway station. This means that hikes can be started or ended in Höör.
Nature Experiences around Höör
For a shorter circuit in the surrounding area, the route around Vaxsjön in the Frostavallen recreation area is a good option. It is just under 3 kilometres long and has a firm surface that allows it to be used by wheelchair users and with prams. Wheelchair users may require assistance in some sections. Frostavallen is about 5 kilometres from Höör railway station.
The nearby Orups strövområde offers five walking and hiking loops of varying lengths, mountain-biking trails and hilly terrain. In the nature reserve around Allarps bjär, the Skåneleden passes through a wooded basalt hill. In spring, carpets of wood anemones, yellow anemones and wild garlic bloom there. Further trails can be found in the Klintaskogen nature reserve on Östra Ringsjön and on Västra Bosjöklosterhalvön, where a marked hiking trail and a picnic area with a fire pit are located on the lakeshore.
Culture and History in the Town
Höör Church was built in the second half of the 12th century by Mårten Stenmästare, using stone from Höörs stenskog. The apse, chancel and nave are preserved from the medieval church. The original baptismal font, with the runic inscription “Martin mik giarde”, also contributes to the historic atmosphere; the inscription can probably be attributed to Mårten Stenmästare.
In the town centre, Kulturhuset Anders offers concerts, theatre, dance, art exhibitions and cinema. The art gallery Höörs konsthall holds around ten exhibitions there each year. The School Museum is housed in a stone building from the 1830s that was Höör’s first school. Berggrenska gården, a Scanian longhouse from the 19th century with a museum, is closed until further notice. Today’s Gästgivaregård in Höör is said to have served as an inn since the early 18th century. In the surrounding area, Bosjökloster—with exhibitions, animal enclosures, gardens by Ringsjön and 900 years of history—and the landscapes around the lake complement the cultural offerings.
Which Location Suits Your Holiday Apartment?
Those planning hikes from the town will find the railway station and the Skåneleden routes running through the centre to be important reference points. Höörs Mölla is about 1.5 kilometres from Höör railway station. If you want to combine different landscapes and destinations, the trails also lead to the areas around Frostavallen, Orup and Allarp, as well as to Ringsjön.
For shorter exercise sessions, there is also the 750-metre-long, illuminated fitness and running trail Backaslingan near Villa Backa. To the north, it connects to the pedestrian and cycle path by Kvarnbäcks Bouleplätzen, and to the south to Hälsans stig and the Skåneleden; there are two barbecue areas along the route. At Höörs Bad och Sportcentrum, the three sports halls can be booked via the website of Höör Municipality. At the ice rink, skates and helmets can be rented while supplies last.
