Discover Kattarp: Hiking, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Kattarp
Kattarp combines rural landscapes, historical traces and varied paths into a destination that can be discovered step by step. Between farmland, deciduous forests, wetlands and old farms, you will find a range of opportunities for active days and peaceful nature watching. The history of the church village also gives the trip its own distinctive character.
Hiking trails between fields, farms and woodland
The “By till by” hiking loop is 8.5 or 9.5 kilometres long. It runs between Kattarp and Hasslarp through farmland, passes manor farms and follows old deciduous meadows. This makes it possible to combine a longer hike with scenic impressions and regional architectural history. If you prefer a shorter route, you can choose the 5-kilometre Signestorpsslingan. The route follows gravel roads and forest paths past historic manor farms and through lush deciduous woodland.
The Äppelskogsslingan is a 1-kilometre hiking route. Another opportunity for exercise is provided by the old railway embankment between Höganäs and Kattarp, where you can cycle or hike. The Västrabyslingan leads through a flat, expansive agricultural landscape, offering a different experience from the forest paths around Signestorps. This allows you to plan your day according to whether you are looking for a longer loop, a short route, forest paths or open fields.
Experience nature and watch birds
Among the special natural areas are the Hasslarps dammar. This recreational area is known for its rich birdlife; there you can go for walks, barbecue and watch birds. Tursköpsskogen is a 30-hectare deciduous forest and has been a nature reserve since October 2021, located between Svedberga kulle and Kattarps by. South of Jöns Jonsgården, there is also Signestorps skog, a small, species-rich and valuable deciduous forest.
Kattarps mosse is used for recreation and is classified as a key biotope because of its abundance of fungi. This creates various possibilities, especially for travellers who see nature not merely as a backdrop but as an important part of their holiday: walks by the water, forest landscapes, open fields, or observing birds and other natural features.
Church, church village and traditional farm
Kattarp has medieval roots. The church village consisted of 13 farms; a land reorganisation was carried out in 1826. Kattarps kyrka was built at its present location as early as the beginning of the 13th century. Today, only the western half, the tower and the nave of the medieval church remain. Kattarps kyrka also houses Nils Forsberg’s large altarpiece, which was donated in 1911 and signed in 1913. Anyone interested in church art and regional history can specifically include these details in their travel plans.
Jöns Jonsgården is a traditional half-timbered farm maintained by a foundation as a cultural reserve, and has been a listed historic building since 1991. Guided tours of Jöns Jonsgården are available by prior booking. This makes the farm a particularly easy-to-plan cultural element for a stay in which the landscape and local history belong together.
The right base for planning your trip
When looking for a holiday apartment in Kattarp, it is worth first deciding on the focus you want for your trip. For longer hikes, the “By till by” and Signestorpsslingan routes are ideal fixed points in your itinerary. For shorter walks or a combination of nature and culture, the Äppelskogsslingan, Kattarps kyrka and Jöns Jonsgården can be included in your plans. Travellers with different interests can also combine nature watching, cycling and historical discoveries without focusing the trip on just one activity.
For planning your journey, Kattarp railway station is relevant: Pågatåg trains currently stop there, carrying passengers towards Helsingborg and Halmstad. Äppelskogen is less than a five-minute walk north of the station; the level route there is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. A holiday apartment or holiday home should therefore primarily be chosen according to which of the experiences mentioned will shape your stay and how you prefer to spend each day.
