Vittaryd is a church village with roots in the Late Iron Age and has been a parish centre since the Middle Ages. Burial grounds, a stone labyrinth and the church make the area’s long history tangible at specific sites. The gently rolling landscape, the Nydalaleden Pilgrim Route and Swedish fika in Flattinge offer further reasons to explore Vittaryd and its surroundings.

Traces of the Iron Age and the Parish

Several burial grounds shape Vittaryd’s historic character. The largest comprises around 55 burial mounds. Trelleborgen, a labyrinth built from small paving stones, lies at the edge of a burial ground dating from the Late Iron Age. It is the only surviving labyrinth in Kronoberg County and is located just a few hundred metres north of the church. Those interested in early settlement history will find a particularly vivid point of reference for the area’s history here.

Vittaryds kyrka is a stone hall church that was probably built in the late Middle Ages. It replaced an earlier stave church, the remains of which have been found. The church and labyrinth thus represent different chapters in the history of the church village; the labyrinth’s location also helps visitors place these two specific sites in relation to each other. Klockaregård is also part of the history of the parish: the building south of Vittaryds kyrka was the home of the parish clerk.

Other historic places and names add to this picture. Johanneshus has a well-preserved main building dating from 1880, which is of great cultural and historical significance. Stenhusholmen was built in the 1460s–1470s by the elder Gustav Stenbock, a member of the Council of the Realm. Runstensbron in Vittaryd is one of the area’s best-known runestones. Together, these sites offer different ways to explore architectural history, church life and older traditions, without having to focus on a single era.

Landscape, Pilgrim Route and Water

Vittaryd lies in a gently rolling landscape crossed by low ridges. Toftaholm, on the eastern shore of Lake Vidöstern, offers another perspective on the landscape. The area there includes arable land, pasture, grazed deciduous woodland and shoreline. If you would like to consider different types of landscape alongside cultural attractions when planning your holiday, these features can help you decide what to focus on.
