Discover Lagan: Gorge, River Landscape and Culture
Accommodation in Lagan
Lagan is situated on the River Lagan and in the immediate vicinity of the E4 north of the main town of Ljungby. This gives the town a clearly identifiable transport location combined with a variety of destinations amid river landscapes, gorges, nature and culture. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Lagan, it is worth first considering which experiences should be the focus of your trip: active routes, water, wildlife observation, family activities or traces of history.
Gorge, Skywalk and Learning Trail
One distinctive landscape experience is Bergaravinen. It is approximately 7 metres deep and 300 metres long; the Trotteslövsbäcken stream flows along its bottom. The Bergastigen Skywalk extends 5 metres beyond the edge of the gorge and is located 8 metres above the Trotteslövsbäcken. Such specific viewpoints give a stay in Lagan a special accent without requiring you to devote the entire day exclusively to one attraction.
The Lärande Stig also runs along the Bergastigen. The learning trail comprises 40 information boards about birds, animals and nature. Bergastigen itself is approximately 8 kilometres long. When planning your day, you can therefore choose between an individual landscape destination and a longer outing. The information about the route helps you compare the type of excursion you want in advance with the interests of your travel group.
Water, Animals and Activities
The Lagaån is a destination for excursions in Lagan. In addition, Ringbadet is open during the summer. Anyone who enjoys fishing can obtain fishing permits for fishing in the River Lagan from the tourist information office at Laganland. The seasonal opening of Ringbadet and the opening period of Laganland Moose Park are important points for trip planning: the moose park covers six hectares of woodland and is open from April to October.
Buslandet Lagan is an indoor playground for children aged 1 to 15. Lagan also has a 27-hole golf course. This means that active days, weather-independent activities and excursions into the landscape can be given different weight when choosing the period of your stay.
Textile History and Local Culture
Just outside Lagan are Lagans Textilfabriker, also known as Smålands Yllefabriker. The factories have been located there since the early 20th century, at the point where the Skålån flows into the Lagaån. In 1914, the factory was taken over by Axel Leonard Tidstrand; the establishment of a spinning mill marked the starting point of the textile industry in Lagan. A small workers’ settlement with housing and a shop was also established in Åbyfors near Lagan. The now-demolished Åbyforsbaren housed accommodation and a dining establishment for the unmarried factory staff.
The Berga kyrka and the Nystanet artwork on the Torget in Lagan offer further cultural impressions. Berga kyrka contains a 12th-century baptismal font as well as Romanesque ornamentation and depictions of animals. Nystanet is made of brass, copper and stainless-steel wire. The Hallsjö kyrkoruin is also located in the vicinity of Lagan. It has been renovated with benches, a wooden crucifix and a wooden altar and is used for outdoor church services.
Which Location Suits Your Trip?
The proximity to the E4 may be a relevant criterion when travelling to the area. A paved cycle path connects Lagan with Ljungby, providing another opportunity to include both places in your travel plans. The tourist information office at Laganland provides information about Ljungby Municipality and the province of Småland. In Lagan itself, the library offers Meröppet access; at certain times, visits are possible even without staff present.
For a trip with children, Buslandet Lagan can provide a weather-independent activity, while Ringbadet complements a summer stay. Nature enthusiasts can include Bergaravinen, Bergastigen and the Lärande Stig. Those with a stronger interest in regional history will find different topics for planning their days in the textile factories, Berga kyrka and Hallsjö kyrkoruin. Choose your accommodation according to the rhythm you want: based on excursions into the landscape, cultural discoveries, activities by the water or a combination of several interests.
