Quartell amid mills, waterways and the Mediterranean

Culture and history

The Molí Nou Water Mill Museum preserves wooden machinery from wheat and rice mills. The permanent exhibitions focus on rice cultivation, agricultural implements powered by draught animals, the municipal collection of weights and measures, and objects from traditional society under the theme of energy. The 18th-century rice mill wheel has also been preserved at Molí Nou.

The parish church of Santa Ana was built in the Baroque style in the 17th century; it houses an Ecce Homo attributed to Juan de Juanes. The Sistar de Quartell is a 15th-century water-distribution building.

Routes

Quartell is included in the hiking and mountain-biking routes “La Conquista de Valencia” of the Camino del Cid. The Ruta de l’Aigua is a signposted route with information panels explaining traditional water-management structures such as water dividers, irrigation channels and mills. The Sistar de Quartell is considered the largest water divider on the Ruta del Agua.

Music and festivals

On the Ruta Joaquín Rodrigo de Quartell, you can follow the information panels to learn more about the composer’s life and listen to parts of his music. The Joaquín Rodrigo International Guitar Festival has been held in Quartell since 2015 and offers master classes in classical guitar, flamenco guitar and flamenco dancing. Across eleven editions, the festival continuously offered concerts and educational programmes featuring national and international guest artists; twelve guest artists took part in each edition, more than 130 in total. Joaquín Rodrigo repeatedly visited Quartell during the first years of his life, played there and walked through the town’s streets until his grandmother died.

The patron-saint festivals in Quartell honour Ángel Custodio and Santa Ana. The programme includes processions, parades, open-air celebrations, bous al carrer, concerts and fireworks. The Plantà del Pi takes place on the first Friday of the patron-saint festivals: young people erect a large pine tree in the town hall square, followed by a Cordà. Quartell’s Holy Week includes a performance of the Passion of Christ with more than 100 local performers and natural settings throughout the town.
