Culinary traditions

The Orxata Experience includes a guided visit to an organic chufa field, a facility producing natural horchata and a tasting. The Alquería El Machistre now houses the Museo de la Horchata y de la Chufa. It explains how horchata is made and chufa is grown, how they are marketed today and how this was done two hundred years ago. A guided visit to the museum includes the museum, the outdoor areas of the Alquería El Machistre and a horchata tasting.

Día de la Horchata takes place every year in July, usually on the first or second Wednesday, in Alboraya.

Culture and history

Alboraya’s historic centre preserves its streetscape, as well as rural houses and urban houses in the Modernisme and Art Deco styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Casa de Conde de Zanoguera building dates structurally from the 17th century. Today, the Casa de Conde de Zanoguera houses the tourist information office, the headquarters of the “Chufa de Valencia” designation of origin, and municipal exhibitions and activities.

El Pont del Moro dates approximately from the late 15th or early 16th century and bears visible traces of cartwheels.

On Whit Monday, the people of Alboraya celebrate the El Miracle dels Peixets festival with a pilgrimage from the town to the Ermita dels Peixets. The Ermita dels Peixets lies by the sea on the right bank of the Barranco del Carraixet and commemorates the dels Peixets miracle, which, according to legend, is said to have taken place here in 1348.

Landscape and nature

The landscape of Alboraya’s Huerta includes cultivated areas, irrigation channels, rural paths, barracas and alquerías. It was shaped by an irrigation system comprising the Acequia Real de Moncada, the Canal del Turia and other channels managed by the Tribunal de los Aigües, which were designed for gravity-fed irrigation. Alboraya belongs to the agricultural area of the historic irrigation system of l’Horta de València, recognised by the FAO as a “Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (SIPAM)”.

Waterfowl use the section of the Barranco del Carraixet near Alboraya as a breeding area throughout the year and as a stopover site during migration.

Playa Els Peixets is the only non-urbanised beach in Alboraya and features dunes, golden sand and gravel.

The marina of Port Saplaya is known as “la pequeña Venecia” (“little Venice”).

Getting around

The Vía Verde Xurra runs through Alboraya and connects the town with València and other towns.

In the Alboraya section, the route begins at the crossing over the Barranco del Carraixet and follows the right bank to the river mouth.

From Valencia, Alboraya can be reached on metro lines 3 (Rafelbuñol–Aeropuerto) and 9 (Alboraia Peris Aragón–Ribarroja de Túria).
