Discover Buñol: Castle, Nature and Music

Castillo de Buñol is a medieval fortress with origins in the 11th or 12th century, which was remodeled after the Christian conquest in the 14th century.

Culture and history

Castillo de Buñol is intended to be accessible every day of the year and at all times; admission is free. Buñol’s castle district comprises narrow streets of Muslim origin that lead to small whitewashed squares.

Molino de Galán is an example of pre-industrial heritage and symbolizes the importance of the paper industry in Buñol. Its building dates from the first half of the 19th century. The renovated Molino Galán houses a library, a conference room, exhibition spaces and sports facilities. Molino Galán also contains the La Tomatina Museum, with an immersive room featuring 270-degree projection and photo panels on the development of the festival. An app, augmented reality and virtual reality convey the festival experience to visitors there.

The archaeological collection of Buñol includes significant finds from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Iron Age and Bronze Age, as well as remains of Iberian and Roman culture from Buñol and its surroundings. Buñol also has a cemetery that can be visited today, with graves featuring Masonic symbolism.

Festivals and music

La Tomatina de Buñol was declared a festival of international tourist interest by the Secretaría General de Turismo in 2002. The children’s event is intended for children aged 4 to 14 and is usually scheduled for the Saturday before the main event.

The concert held annually on the last Sunday in August by Buñol’s two music societies is recognized as a festival of regional tourist interest. It brings together the Sociedad Musical “La Artística”, the Centro Instructivo Musical “La Armónica”, and invited brass bands from the region and other parts of Spain. The Bienal de Música de Buñol takes place every two years and includes programs featuring classical music, jazz, soul, blues, folk, pop and rock, as well as courses and master classes.

The De Par en Part festival opens artists’ homes to visitors and includes murals, exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and design and visual arts competitions.

Nature and landscape

The Parque Fluvial is a walking route along the riverbed of the Buñol, whose riverside area has been restored and redeveloped. The Parque Fluvial has been affected by the effects of the DANA. Parque de San Luis contains the Ermita de San Luís Beltrán, remodeled in 1896, a spring and the bubbling emergence of spring water.

Cueva Turche is a geological formation with a lake and waterfall enclosed by a large rocky amphitheater. When crossing the natural area, large formations of stalagmites and stalactites can be seen. A park features a large green area, a lake and sports facilities that enable various outdoor activities.

Trails and activities

The Ruta de la Música is a walkable route that conveys Buñol’s musical heritage through information panels and signs with augmented reality. The SLCV 166 Ruta del Agua is a 7.2-kilometer circular route of moderate difficulty starting at Parque de San Luis. At Parque El Planell, a permanent orienteering course allows visitors to try out and learn this sport; control points, maps, posts or markers, and a compass are used for this purpose.

The Ruta de Las Fuentes runs through a large part of the municipality of Buñol and leads to most of the town’s fountains as well as scenic locations. The PRV 190 Las Moratillas is 29.6 kilometers long and leads from Buñol via the Sierra Malacara, Pico Nevera and Barranco Carcalín to Las Moratillas. The difficulty level is high, and the stated walking time is 7 hours 45 minutes.

A hiking route leads into the Barranco Carcalín, via Alto Jorge and past areas such as El Dique, Corral de Cabras, the fossil beaches and the Puente Natural, continuing to La Jarra and the Buñol River; it is aimed at experienced hikers on unpaved paths and uneven terrain. The first section of the route is suitable for the whole family; from the natural pools known as La Jarra onward, a more demanding section begins.

A theatrical family tour conveys the traditions and historical ways of life of Buñol and actively involves adults and children in a journey through time. A theatrical tour covers the history of paper production in Buñol and the documents produced there since the 18th century. Buñol is the end of the second and the beginning of the third stage of a route that runs via Chiva, Buñol and Requena towards Cuenca.

Local character

Mojete is considered Buñol’s characteristic dish; it is prepared with flour and meat or cod and is particularly associated with the night of La Tomatina. In the Gothic palace of Castillo de Buñol, a wine tasting by Bodega Viñas del Portillo is offered, featuring the white wine CAÑAS Y BARRO and the red wines ALBUFERA selección and ALBUFERA original.

Getting there

Buñol is located on the Renfe Cercanías C3 line on the València–Buñol–Utiel route. Alternative bus services operate between Buñol and Utiel to supplement the service on line C3.
