Bolbaite amid riverscapes, history and festivals

Bolbaite brings together riverscapes, local history and festival traditions. In the town centre, the Sellent River, also known as the Río de Bolbaite, divides the town into two halves; bridges connect the two sides.

A walk through the Paraje del Río Sellent leads through the riverscape and offers the opportunity to enjoy its clear waters. At the mouth of the Sellent River, a natural lake forms that has been developed as an inland bathing area. Bolbaite Agroforestal is an 8.48-kilometre circular route with an approximate duration of 55 minutes. The recreation area can be reached on foot from Bolbaite’s historic centre, as vehicle access is restricted to residents. At the Ermita Santa Bárbara, in the upper part of Bolbaite, there is a recreation area with beautiful views. Next to the ermita is a spacious recreation area with picnic tables and a restaurant.

Culture

A relic of the saint is kept in the parish church of San Francisco de Paula. In the Castillo de Bolbaite, information panels provide details about its history and architectural features. In Bolbaite, traditional woven items made from wicker and esparto grass, as well as “caliqueños”, small cigars, are produced.

Festivals

In spring, patron saint festivities in honour of San Francisco de Paula were held during the second week of Easter. The festival in honour of the patron saint Santa Bárbara is celebrated in Bolbaite on 4 December with a “Despertà”. Early in the morning, a brass band makes its way through the streets playing popular songs; loose fireworks are set off, and pilgrimages lead to the Ermita Santa Bárbara and back.

The festivities of San Antón on the 15th, 16th and 17th include setting up the “luminaria”, blessing bread and animals in the Plaza de la Iglesia, and then roasting meat over the embers; peanuts and wine are also offered to everyone. The Moros y Cristianos brought colour and a festive atmosphere to the streets of Bolbaite.
