Holiday apartment in Moratalla: culture, festivals and mountain scenery

Moratalla combines historic sites with a distinctive mountain and river landscape. Culture, nature and regional festival traditions exist side by side here, giving the town a range of different facets – from medieval buildings and religious sites to hiking trails, river courses and traditional customs.

Culture and history

The Castillo Fortaleza encompasses several historical layers. The first Islamic structure was built around the 9th century over Neolithic and Iberian remains. In the 15th century, the Order of Santiago rebuilt the Castillo Fortaleza. The Torre del Homenaje of the Castillo Fortaleza is an example of 15th-century Levantine military Gothic architecture.

Moratalla can be explored on foot through its medieval historic center, where stately homes and chapels can be seen. A monumental building with a basilica-style floor plan, vaulted ceiling and imposing Tuscan columns was designed for the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.

The Centro de Interpretación contains a short audiovisual presentation on the ground floor and a museographic exhibition program on the upper floor, with an archive on rock art. It includes explanatory material on the process by which UNESCO recognition as a World Heritage Site was granted.

The Mirador Plaza de la Iglesia also combines a specific historical detail with the townscape. There, an original fountain made of Cehegín jasper retains its 18th-century form; it is crafted from red, gray and black marble. From the viewpoint, there is an expansive panoramic view of the Huerta of Moratalla, the old town and the surrounding sierras.

Religious sites and traditions

The Ermita, or Santuario Casa de Cristo, is located 6 km from the center of Moratalla and was built in the vernacular Baroque style in the 17th century. The origin of the Santuario Casa de Cristo is linked to the traditional account of Christ appearing to the shepherd Rui Sánchez on April 19, 1493.

An annual religious tradition is the Romería in honor of Moratalla’s patron saint, Jesucristo Aparecido. It takes place on the first Sunday in May and leads from the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción to the Ermita Casa Cristo. During the procession, the images of the patron saint and the Virgen de la Rogativa are carried.

The drums of Moratalla have been recognized as a festival of regional tourist interest and belong to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. During Moratalla’s Holy Week drums tradition, the Tamboristas play with their faces concealed under a capirote and wear strikingly colorful tunics. A permanent exhibition provides information about two important festivals in Moratalla: the drums of Semana Santa and the “Encierros por Vereda”.

The festivities in Moratalla last from July 11 to 17. The focus is on the traditional “Encierros por Vereda”, in which fighting bulls are released, along with numerous other festival events.

Nature and mountain scenery

The Sendero Bolvonegro runs through a special conservation area within the Natura 2000 network, where the Alhárabe and Benamor rivers merge to form the Moratalla River. The path follows the course of the rivers to the Estrecho de Bolvonegro gorge.

The Revolcadores massif, also known as Sierra Seca, is the highest mountain in the Region of Murcia at 2,015 meters. Revolcadores is a popular destination for mountain hikes in the region, especially on snowy days. During excursions to the massif, Iberian ibex, golden eagles, eagle owls and Spanish junipers can be observed, among other species.

The blooming of Moratalla’s aromatic plants brings nature and agriculture together: it colors the landscape violet and is linked to the production of essential oils.
