Urroz: Church, Local History and Vuelta a Itzaga

Urroz-Villa offers a glimpse into a local history that can be read in its walls, church art and historic houses.

Culture and History

Urroz-Villa was surrounded by walls until 1516, when their demolition was ordered. The Crucero de San Blas is a late Gothic sculptural work from the late 15th or early 16th century and marks the end of Urroz-Villa in the direction of Pamplona. Casa Bastida is a palace house with a well-preserved façade. Gothic houses with coat-of-arms-adorned doorways have been preserved in the town centre. Torreblanca Palace is registered as a “palacio cabo de armería”.

The Ermita de San Pedro was collectively rehabilitated by local residents in the late 1980s and early 1990s as part of an Auzolan. During the summer months, it serves as a place of prayer at least one day a week. The Church of La Asunción is an imposing Gothic building constructed between the 14th and 16th centuries on the site of an earlier Romanesque structure. It has a Renaissance main altarpiece by Miguel de Espinal dating from 1570, which is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest. Its tower houses a high altar retable from the workshop of Miguel de Espinal. A Gothic work from the second half of the 16th century is protected by a wooden shrine.

Plaza del Ferial covers 7,540 m² and is the venue for the San Martín Fair. It also has a covered pelota court dating from 1813. More than 100 stalls run by craftspeople and agri-food producers gather at the Feria de Artesanía de Urroz-Villa.

Landscape and Activity

Paths and the landscape also contribute to the distinctive character of the town: the historic Tren del Irati railway had a stop in Urroz-Villa. The Cañada Real de Milagro a Aezkoa crosses Urroz-Villa along a clearly defined and well-preserved section. Poplars, willows, alders, maple trees and ash trees grow along the riverbanks in the area around Urroz-Villa.

The Vuelta a Itzaga route begins in Urroz-Villa. It is a challenging 81.82 km circular route for gravel cyclists with 1,306 m of elevation gain. This provides different formats for planning your day: individual cultural and historical points in the town, events held in a square, landscapes along the river and a long circular route. The route can be viewed differently through its starting point, distance and elevation gain than the town-based cultural points: here, the focus is on a continuous circular course, while there it is on individual buildings, squares and historical reminders of the town.
