Villava: Way of St. James, Batán and Culture in Navarre

Villava is home to the Batán de Villava, an example of industrial archaeology. The Batán de Villava features a permanent exhibition about the Parque Fluvial. The complex also includes a replica of the machinery from the former fulling mill, recreating the traditional process of fulling cloth.

Culture

A notable landmark is the Rollo, a Tuscan column probably erected in the 15th or 16th century and standing 2.24 metres high. It symbolises the jurisdiction and municipal freedom of the Villa of Villava.

On Calle Mayor, next to the Town Hall, stands the monument to Sancho VI El Sabio. It was erected in 1984 to mark the 800th anniversary of the granting of town privileges to the Villa of Villava.

The Atarrabia Frontón was built by the municipality in 1931 and was one of the first covered frontón courts in Navarre.

Traditions

Villava’s patron-saint festivities are held in honour of Our Lady of the Rosary and last for one week.

The feast of Saint Andrew takes place on 30 November and includes the presentation of the prizes for the “Pedro de Atarrabia” literary competition.

The programme of the patron-saint festivities also includes a tasting competition for Relleno. Relleno is a traditional festive dish from the villages of northern Navarre, including Villava.
