Murchante can be explored through its church, the works of a local painter, traditional festivals and outdoor trails.

Culture

The Iglesia Ntra. Señora de la Asunción was built in 1952 on the site of an older church and is considered a Churrigueresque building. The main altar dates from 1700. The Museo Basiano is located in the Casa de Cultura de Murchante and is dedicated to the local painter Jesús Basiano Martínez Pérez (1889–1966). It contains paintings, objects belonging to the painter and various documents about Jesús Basiano Martínez Pérez. Many of his works reflect the diverse landscapes of Navarre.

Festivals and Traditions

El Paloteado takes place on 15 August in the Plaza de los Fueros as part of Murchante’s patron saint festivities. El Paloteado combines dance, paloteado and the colourful Encintado. The tradition of blessing the fields for San Gregorio is still practised in Murchante and takes place on the Sunday closest to 9 May. This celebration ends with the popular races and outdoor meals known as „joyas“.

The Santo Cristo celebration takes place on the second weekend of November with a solemn Mass and a procession through Murchante. The Santo Cristo de la Cruz a Cuestas is a Baroque carving from the early 17th century by Juan de Biniés and Pedro Martínez. El Mayo is a May tradition in which a tree, usually a poplar, is erected in the Plaza de los Fueros. After disappearing for decades, El Mayo was recently revived by the Cofradía de la Tostada de Ajo.

Trails and Events

The Circuito urbano is a health trail of around six kilometres around Murchante and has several pieces of equipment for sports exercises. At Cabezo San Gregorio there is a hermitage and several picnic areas. The Vía Verde del Tarazonica is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. One route leads to Murchante railway station, where it is worth taking a break.

A road cycling event is designed as physical activity for leisure, tourism and cultural purposes, rather than as a competition. It takes place on the Friday before the patron saint festivities, which run from 14 to 21 August. The circular route, Vía Verde and road cycling event can be compared as different forms of activity.
