Discover Donamaria: Culture, Trails and Holiday Apartments
Donamaria can be understood through specific places: in Gaztelu (Donamaría), the Sima de Legarrea is designated as a Lugar de Memoria Histórica de Navarra (Site of Historical Memory of Navarre). The exhumation of the bodies at the Sima de Legarrea in September 2016 confirmed that the story passed down was accurate.
Culture and history
The Iglesia de la Asunción has a Latin-cross floor plan and is covered by a barrel vault with lunettes. Its cylindrical bell tower with a conical roof was completed in 1846. The 19th-century high altarpiece has three image panels and figurative decoration. The church also preserves a large stone baptismal font with geometricized plant decoration in relief and four trefoil-shaped arches on the front.
When planning a day focused on culture, you can consider architectural details and historical themes separately instead of combining them into a single focus.
Jauregia is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest) and is one of the last surviving examples of this type of civil architecture in Navarre. Jauregia, also known as “Casa de Tablas”, has four floors: two made of stone and two made of wood, or with a wooden fighting gallery (cadalso). Jauregia houses an exhibition about the restoration of the palace and the history of defensive and residential towers in Navarre.
