Burguete: Camino de Santiago, History and Holiday Apartments

A distinctive feature of Burguete is the listed historic centre of Auritz-Burguete, which the Camino de Santiago passes through. Auritz-Burguete developed around the pilgrimage route in order to provide for pilgrims arriving from Europe via the Pyrenees. Culture and History

The municipal cemetery of Auritz-Burguete was designed by Miguel Gortari in 1964 and was recognised throughout the country for its beauty and innovative design. Auritz-Burguete also retains Pyrenean houses with hipped roofs and roof pitches of up to 60 degrees, designed to cope with snow. The archaeological site of Zaldua contains remains of the Roman road from Astorga to Bordeaux. Neolithic dolmens, including the Dolmen of Lindus, are located within the municipality of Burguete.

Routes and Activities

The routes also tell the story of the region’s border and mountain history. The proposed Ruta de los Búnkeres de Burguete is intended to lead along the border area in the Pyrenees, via three marked trails, to the remains of a line of fortifications that was already planned during the Spanish Civil War. The fourth stage of the GR Urkiaga–Auritz/Burguete is an 18-kilometre hiking stage that passes through Auritz/Burguete. The Valles de Arce y Aezkoa route starts in the north in Burguete and descends to the Palacio de Arce. Irati E-bike offers guided rides on electric mountain bikes, including bicycle rental, which can start in Auritz/Burguete. The Parque Micológico Erro-Roncesvalles organises guided visits in nature, during which experts share their knowledge of mycology.
