Galar – Culture, Camino de Santiago and Mountain Trails

In Galar, discovery begins with the parish church of San Martín de Galar: it was built largely in the 16th century by the stonemason Miguel de Iriarte. Its floor plan takes the form of a Latin cross; it is covered with ribbed and star vaults. The church preserves a Romanesque portal from the late 12th century, whose capitals are decorated with interlacing patterns, foliage, and animals. Architecture and everyday history provide different points of emphasis: the church displays elaborate architectural forms and a medieval portal, while the Lavadero recalls the work performed by women over generations. Thus, sacred art and everyday culture come together thematically in Galar.

Culture

At the Lavadero de Galar, another path leads into the history of the town. The Lavadero de Galar was reconstructed as a memorial site in 2015. A plaque there commemorates the women who performed this hard and necessary work over generations. The online archive of the intangible cultural heritage of the Cendea de Galar documents the region’s intangible cultural heritage. The archive contains the entries “07 Alimentación 1”, “09 Comidas”, “10 Comidas”, “11 Bendición de la mesa” and “12 Menús festivos”. In Galar, smaller feast days are also celebrated on November 8.

Trails

Galar is one of the designated start and finish locations of the Galar Trail 2.0. The mountain race takes place annually on the first Sunday in March and starts at 10:00 a.m. It leads through the Sierra de Erreniega and is approximately 15 kilometers long, with 850 meters of elevation gain. For personal planning, the date, approximate distance, and elevation gain can be considered separately; they address different questions concerning travel time, route length, and the rhythm of the day. Route planning therefore involves different rhythms side by side: the annually scheduled mountain race with its March date, the Camino de Santiago stage between two places, and the new connections by bicycle. The date, route characteristics, and mode of transport can thus be incorporated separately into the day’s planning.

The Camino de Santiago also passes through the town. The Camino Francés stage from Cizur Menor to Puente la Reina crosses the road to Galar and passes the elevated village. On the Camino de Santiago from Pamplona to Puente la Reina, Galar can be seen on the left, while the paved path climbs between cultivated hills. New cycle paths connect Galar with Arlegui and Subiza; construction work has been completed.

Landscape

The Cendea de Galar extends across the northern, shady side of the sierra and has traditionally been characterized by the cultivation of cereals, fodder crops, and legumes. The original mixed woodland vegetation of holm oaks, Pyrenean oaks, and small-leaved oaks is almost exclusively limited to the northern slope of El Perdón; the rest of the landscape is largely characterized by artificially planted pine forests. The landscape also brings cultivated and wooded areas together. Cultivated hills accompany the paved Camino de Santiago, while the northern side of the sierra is characterized by agricultural land and different types of woodland.
