Berzosa del Lozoya: Trails, Dehesa and Sierra Views

Berzosa del Lozoya has an easy, well-signposted circular route, „La Falla de Berzosa: un viaje a los orígenes de la Tierra“. It is suitable for families and for those starting out with hiking. Nature

The route passes through a Dehesa landscape with pastures and scattered trees, especially Pyrenean oaks. It also includes holm oak stands and granite outcrops. The Mirador El Balcón viewpoint offers views of Berzosa del Lozoya, the Sierra de La Cabrera, Mondalindo, Cabeza de Hierro, Peñalara and the Montes Carpetanos.

The Senda del Picozo is almost 2 km long and offers views of the Sierra de Guadarrama, including its highest peak, Pico Peñalara. An easy, approximately one-hour family trail through the Dehesa de Berzosa offers views of the El Villar and El Atazar reservoirs. Culture and History

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates from the 17th century and was rebuilt after suffering severe damage during the Spanish Civil War. Its single-nave, rectangular body is made of the stone typical of the area; in front is an open portico supported by cushion-profiled pillars. Some traditional bell signals are still used at the church today.

The old El Lavadero washhouse was built in the 1940s over earlier washing basins. It has two basins: one for soaping and scrubbing the laundry and another for rinsing it. Berzosa del Lozoya also has a mural by Doa Oa entitled „Reforestando Cistus Ladanifer“, inspired by the area’s wild-growing vegetation.

Activities

Fishing is possible in the Lozoya and Riato rivers and near the El Villar and Puentes Viejas dams; a fishing licence is required. Fish species include barbel, brown trout, black bass, carp and pike.

Cycling tours are possible in Berzosa del Lozoya on roads, paths and mountain tracks. Road cyclists will find winding roads and steep climbs. Hiking and cycling therefore place different emphasis on route, surface and elevation profile.
