Nature and Landscape
Part of the municipality of Arganda del Rey lies within the Parque Regional del Sureste. The landscape comprises agricultural areas, Mediterranean shrublands, reforested pine forests and wetlands in the valley, where protected animal and plant species occur.
Las Lagunas de Las Madres is a natural area in the Parque Regional del Sureste on the former Las Madres estate in the municipality of Arganda del Rey. An ecological path runs around the first two lagoons, with several information boards and stopping points where distinctive plants can be identified.
The Dehesa El Carrascal covers 131 hectares and is considered the last remaining remnant of a Castilian-Manchegan holm oak forest.
The Las Lagunas de las Madres nature reserve offers various recreational activities in a natural setting, including boat trips. The walking path at Las Lagunas de Las Madres includes prepared observation points where, depending on the season, migratory birds such as black kites, purple herons and cattle egrets can be observed.
Culture and History
The fortifications on Cerro del Melero formed part of the Republican Army’s second defensive line after the Battle of Jarama. They include trenches, shelters, air-raid bunkers, a machine-gun position, foxholes and an observation post.
The Casa del Rey was built in 1594 as a country retreat for Hans Kevenhuller, the German ambassador to the Spanish court at the time. After its restoration and conversion, it is now one of the cultural centres of the municipality of Arganda del Rey.
The Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista was built between 1690 and 1714. Its Cristo Chapel contains the gravestone of Miguel de Cervantes’s maternal family, who originated from Arganda.
The remains of the 13th-century Ermita de Valtierra are considered one of the few examples of Mudéjar architecture in the Comunidad de Madrid. The Ermita de San Roque was built after the plague epidemic of 1600 as a civic votive offering and is considered an example of popular piety.
The Ermita de la Soledad is a Baroque religious building from the 17th century, historically associated with the Jesuits, and houses an original statue of the Virgen de la Soledad from 1810 by José Ginés.
The optical telegraph tower of Arganda was in operation from 1849 to 1856 and is considered one of the most significant towers of its kind in Spain. The municipality offers guided tours of the tower, during which experts explain how it worked.
The Motín de Arganda has been performed since 1994 and has held the Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional distinction since 2025.
Wine and Local Tradition
Wine from Arganda is recognised under the Denominación de Origen “Vinos de Madrid”. Arganda’s wine-growing tradition is associated with evidence of grape cultivation in the Jarama Valley dating from the 3rd century AD.
The wine tradition of Arganda can be explored on a route organised by the Museo del Vino. The route supplements the historical evidence with its own approach to the local wine tradition.
Arganda offers oenological and oleotourism visits to local olive groves and vineyards. Producers explain the harvesting and processing of olives and grapes for oil and wine.
