Rozas: Forest Trails, Church Art and Traditional Architecture

Rozas lies on the Villarino River and has preserved the traditional architectural features of the area. Landscape, sacred history and distinctive local details provide different thematic perspectives here.

Forest Trails and Landscape

The Castañares de Rozas route passes through changing habitats: chestnut groves, more open oak stands and broom scrub accompany the trail. It begins at the former Rozas schools by a metal cross; at its base, a female figure is carved in stone.

The first section from Rozas to Villarino runs through chestnut forests that gradually give way to oak forests. Oak stands are also among the landscape features of the Rozas–Villarino–Trefacio route.

After crossing the stream, the route continues to Villarino and later through woodland to Trefacio. The Rozas – Villarino de Sanabria – Trefacio trail is 7.5 km long. The distance and the named stages help you assess the overall length of the route in advance.

The route offers the opportunity to admire Sanabria’s traditional architecture. The nature trail and the architectural forms are presented here as two clearly distinct themes. Culture and History

The main altar of Santa Cecilia Church in Rozas dates from the 18th century and contains a small tabernacle attributed to Gregorio Español. The tabernacle is dated to the period 1595–1597.

Its door depicts Ecce Homo; Saint Peter and Saint Paul appear on the sides.

Casa del Cura is the former rectory of the parish church of Santa Cecilia in Rozas de Sanabria and was built at the end of the 18th or beginning of the 19th century. The house comprises three independent apartments and four spacious rooms.

Natural Features and Viewpoint

At the entrance to Rozas stands the La Devesa chapel beside an exceptionally large chestnut tree.

The Castaño de la Iglesia de Rozas stands beside Santa Cecilia Church, 40 metres from the road. There is a small tunnel inside it.

On its southern side stands a daughter tree with a circumference of 1.33 metres; there are also further shoots. The Castaño is considered to be around one hundred years old and is classified as “Monumental”.

At the foot of Cerro de San Juan is a viewpoint that is expressly recommended as worth seeing.

The inhabitants of Rozas traditionally bear the nickname “Jaboneros”.
