Culture and Local History

Ribadelago: Ribadelago Nuevo is home to the Museo de la Memoria de Ribadelago. It documents the consequences and impact of the Ribadelago disaster on 9 January 1959.

The Nuestra Señora del Carmen celebration was held on 16 July 2024 with processions and other activities. The victims of the Ribadelago disaster were also honoured.

The traditional houses of Sanabria in Ribadelago have two floors. The lower floor contains equipment and animals, while the upper living area is reached via an exterior staircase.

Ribadelago Nuevo was built as a newly planned village after the dam failure and follows a rectangular street grid organised around the access road and the main square.

Santo Amaro is considered a ruin in the wider regional surroundings of Ribadelago.

Ribadelago combines a place of remembrance, festive tradition and the distinctive architectural form of Sanabrian houses with the clearly structured layout of Ribadelago Nuevo. Historical events, religiously shaped traditions and visible settlement structures thus stand alongside one another as different cultural perspectives.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Ribadelago, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions represent separate planning considerations. They can be weighted differently depending on personal travel plans, while local history, house forms and the landscape remain visible as distinct topics.

Landscape

In the area around Ribadelago, Moncalvo is considered a peak. Trevinca and Pena Trevinca are also considered mountains in the area around Ribadelago.

In the wider regional surroundings of Ribadelago, Alto de Peña Negra is considered a peak.

This spatial classification distinguishes the landscape features in the area around Ribadelago from the peak in the wider regional surroundings. This keeps Moncalvo, Trevinca and Pena Trevinca assigned to a closer geographical context, while Alto de Peña Negra adds the broader landscape reference.

Trails and Water

The Senda del Lago y Los Monjes is marked with blue trail markers. These bear the number 1 and the text “Senda del Lago y Los Monjes”.

The Cañón del río Cárdena y Pico del Fraile can be accessed from Moncabril. The turn-off to Moncabril is on the left at the entrance to Ribadelago Viejo and is approximately 1.5 kilometres away.

The route through the Cañón del río Cárdena y Pico del Fraile runs through a glacial valley. The riverside vegetation is characterised by stands of oak, heather, broom and ferns.

On the route through the Cañón del Tera, waterfalls alternate with small lagoons.

The trail markers of the Senda del Lago y Los Monjes offer a different approach from the landscape features of the Cañón del río Cárdena y Pico del Fraile or the succession of waterfalls and small lagoons at the Cañón del Tera. This makes it possible to view clearly named trails, a glacial valley and water-shaped routes as different nature themes of Ribadelago.
