Molinillo between vineyards and river valleys

Molinillo lies in a valley where the Río Sangusín flows into the Río Alagón. Around the village, there are forests of chestnut, oak, holm oak and strawberry trees, as well as low vegetation on acidic slate soils. The mountainous terrain meant that agriculture around Molinillo used step-like terraces on the slopes. Molinillo is considered part of a biosphere reserve.

Landscape and wine

The vineyards in Molinillo are located on corneana soils. Fuente Gurulla is a 0.55-hectare vineyard in Molinillo that was established in 1918 at an altitude of 850 metres. Growing grapes and olives is considered one of the most important economic activities in Molinillo. Until 2007, the village had a cooperative bodega where wine from the Sierra was produced and sold.

Routes and trails

The Ruta BTT por los Viñedos de la Sierra de Salamanca circular route passes through Molinillo. Its trails run through vineyards included in the protected designation of origin Denominación de Origen Protegida “Sierras de Salamanca”.

The Centro BTT Entresierras comprises 183 kilometres of routes in nine signposted sections within the Sierras de Béjar y Francia Biosphere Reserve. Ruta 2 BTT Entresierras offers views of the Sierra de Francia and the beginning of the Sierra de Béjar.

The Ruta del Cuento, created by the residents of Molinillo, leads to the orchards, olive mills, the Río Alagón and the former wine cooperative, which are considered sights of the municipality of Molinillo.

On stage 3 of the GR-184, the sequence is San Esteban de la Sierra – Santibáñez de la Sierra – Molinillo – Pinedas. The GR-184 does not pass through Molinillo but leaves the village to the right. The ascent in the surroundings of Molinillo is lined with oaks, chestnut trees and dense scrub; afterwards, views open up over the valley floor of the Alagón.

The Iglesia de San Bartolomé stands on the main square of Molinillo. It is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, the patron saint of the village.

The patron saint’s festival of San Bartolomé in Molinillo is given as taking place on 24 August. The festival of Santa Cruz in Molinillo is given as taking place on 3 May; at the Fiesta de la Cruz de Mayo on 3 May 2025, the celebration included a procession to bless the fields.
