History
In May 1811, the Battle of Fuentes de Oñoro took place during the Napoleonic campaign; Masséna's army entered Spain via Fuentes de Oñoro.
The fighting in Fuentes de Oñoro continued until the evening; English regiments pushed the French troops back across the opposite bank.
During the battle, the church was occupied by French troops, after which Fuentes de Oñoro once again came under French control.
The medieval resettlement of Fuentes de Oñoro is associated with the Order of Alcántara in the 13th century. The church of Fuentes de Oñoro contains popular Baroque depictions of Saint Agatha and Saint Bartholomew.
Culture and Townscapes
The Plaza de Toros de La Ermita del Santo Cristo de la Agonía was built next to the Ermita del Santo Cristo de la Agonía. As part of the local festivities, it was scheduled to host a novillada on 17 August 2024 performed by students from the Escuela de Tauromaquia de Salamanca.
On the way to Galapero, stone remains of a necropolis have been preserved, associated with an early settlement in the area around the springs.
A traditional mill is located in the bed of the Ribera del Berrocal, where this watercourse runs through the old town of Fuentes de Oñoro.
Festivals and Dates
The traditional Fiestas de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción will take place from 12 to 16 August 2026 and are considered an annual summer festival among the residents of the Spanish-Portuguese border region of La Raya.
The Cabalgata Hispanolusa will once again take place in Fuentes de Oñoro and Vilar Formoso; the Three Kings will travel through the streets in a carriage.
Landscape and Siega Verde
The name Fuentes de Oñoro is associated with springs on both sides of the river and with alder trees on its banks.
Fuentes de Oñoro is one of the municipalities that initiated the Fundación Siega Verde. The foundation organises guided visits to the Estación Rupestre de Siega Verde, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with rock engravings from the Upper Paleolithic on the Río Águeda.

On 6 August 2025, a children's park with a play and adventure area was opened in the La Ribera area of Fuentes de Oñoro, featuring a seesaw, a hexagonal swing, a mini gondola and a covered slide.
