Villorquite del Páramo – Landscape, Church and Festivals

Villorquite del Páramo lies on the right bank of the Valdeperal River.

Landscape

Around the town centre are threshing floors, vegetable gardens, agricultural land and the erosion gullies of the heathland or plateau landscape. The townscape therefore brings cultivated areas and incised landforms together side by side. The place name Villorquite del Páramo is interpreted as “the village of Alquite in the heathland or plateau landscape”. For travel planning, these details can be understood as indicating the spatial focus without conflating the individual landscape elements.

History and Church

A historical form of the name is recorded in the Becerro de las Presentaciones de León from the 13th to the 15th century: Villorquite del Páramo is listed there as “Villaalquite”.

The Church of San Lorenzo is built of brick and rubble masonry. Its round-arched portal has a projecting porch. In the municipal architectural heritage register, San Lorenzo belongs to the “Integral” protection category.

Inside, the church contains a retable from the second half of the 16th century with Mannerist paintings and an image of the Entombment of Christ in the upper section. The retable includes reliefs of the martyrdom and preaching of Saint Lawrence, the four Evangelists and the Eternal Father; there is also a sculpture of the Madonna and Child. The dating of the retable and the individual motifs provide the artwork with several chronological and thematic points of reference.

A smaller detail can be found on the door of the tabernacle: it features a relief of the Holy Face. An inscription on the retable states that this altar was gilded in 1893.

Festivals

The festival calendar places a fixed August date alongside a date in the liturgical year. The patron saint’s festival in honour of Saint Lawrence is celebrated on 10 August with Masses, including a Requiem Mass, and traditional games. La Octava is traditionally celebrated on the Sunday after Corpus Christi with a Mass, a procession and traditional games; the programme includes traditional skittles championships and card games. The two types of festival can be distinguished by their timing and their combination of religious and recreational elements.
