Discover Palencia: Cathedral, Museums and Waterfront Trails

Palencia is home to the Catedral de San Antolín, a Gothic religious building; its interior contains works by El Greco, Alonso Berruguete and Zurbarán. The Museo Catedralicio is located in the cathedral’s vestibule and chapter house. It displays paintings, sculptures, goldsmithery, tapestries and textiles from different periods and in various styles.

Culture

The Fundación Díaz Caneja is a contemporary art museum and houses a large part of the painter Díaz-Caneja’s work. It has rooms for the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, a library, an auditorium and workshop rooms, and organises cultural activities.

The Centro de Interpretación Victorio Macho is located in a hermitage at the foot of the Cristo del Otero and displays the sculptor’s projects, plans, sketches, busts and models. The Iglesia de San Miguel was remodelled in the Gothic style in the 13th century; it has a battlemented bell tower, three naves and a transept.

The Museo de Palencia is housed in the Casa del Cordón, a building constructed in the first half of the 16th century and the only surviving civil building from that period in the city. Using archaeological remains, the museum explores the prehistoric, Celtiberian, Roman and medieval heritage. The traditional Bautizo del Niño at the Iglesia de San Miguel is celebrated on the first day of the year, 1 January.

Cityscape

The Cristo del Otero is a 21-metre-high sculpture and a defining symbol of the city of Palencia. The viewpoint by the Cristo del Otero offers panoramic views over the city of Palencia. Calle Mayor is more than 900 metres long and has arcades with 199 columns on one side.

Waterfront Trails

The banks of the Río Carrión in Palencia have an area equipped for sports activities, including running, mountain biking and Nordic walking. The Ruta Entre Puentes is a signposted 2-kilometre route with an approximate duration of 30 minutes.

The Ruta de la Vía Verde del Tren Burra is a 29.8-kilometre walking and cycling route that begins at the Dársena del Canal de Castilla. The Canal de Castilla runs through the municipality of Palencia; the capital’s Dársena, the double lock at Viñalta and the Puente de las Arcas are located there.

Getting There

The Estación de Trenes de Palencia, also known as Estación del Norte, is located in the city centre next to the bus station and offers long-distance, medium-distance and high-speed connections operated by Renfe.
