The Hospital de Villarente pilgrim hostel was founded in 1539 next to the bridge by the prior of Triacastela. La Casona is now a restaurant housed in the former rooms of the pilgrim hostel.

The founding regulations of the Villarente pilgrim hospital stipulated that a donkey should be kept ready to take sick pilgrims to León.
