Culture and History

At the heart of Cacabelos lies the Museo Arqueológico de Cacabelos. It houses archaeological and ethnographic heritage dating from prehistoric times to the modern era.

The Yacimiento Arqueológico de la Edrada is part of the area’s archaeological history. The site was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1994. It is a Roman settlement identified with Bergidum Flavium.

The present-day bridge in Cacabelos has six ashlar arches and dates from the 16th and 18th centuries. In the surroundings of Cacabelos, Castro Ventosa is an oppidum, or fortified settlement, considered one of the most significant castros in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.

The Ruta Street Art Cacabelos provides a contemporary cultural accent. It leads through the streets of Cacabelos and includes eight graffiti works by eight different artists; at the same time, it encourages reflection on current aesthetic, social and intellectual questions.

Pilgrimage Route and Sacred Sites

The Santuario de la V Angustia was built in the 18th century in honour of the Virgen de la V Angustia, the patron saint of the municipality, and contains remarkable altarpieces, sculptures and paintings.

At the edge of the town is the public municipal pilgrim hostel Santuario de la Quinta Angustia. It is reserved exclusively for pilgrims on the Way of St. James who have a pilgrim credential.

The Way of St. James passes through Cacabelos for five kilometres to Pieros. For your own travel planning, you can consider the pilgrimage route as a separate focus alongside the historical and artistic sites.

Paths and Water

There are ten hiking and cycling routes from Cacabelos. These two forms of activity offer different ways to incorporate the surrounding area into your personal planning.

The Ruta de los Molinos comprises six buildings with water-powered channel mills. Each building houses the mill itself, an apartment and a storage area.

The Ruta de los Molinos begins at Plaza del Santuario, follows the left bank of the river towards Quilós along the riverside promenade to the mills of Villabuena in Pico da Vila, and returns to the starting point via Arborbuena.
