Discover Sariegos: Hiking Trails, Nature and History

Sariegos offers hiking trails that start in its various districts. The Ruta de las Fuentes is a circular trail focused on the numerous springs scattered between the two valleys crossed by the route. From the trail, views extend across the Bernesga Valley to the city of León.

Hiking and Nature

In the municipality of Sariegos, in Pobladura del Bernesga, the Ruta de los Llanos offers panoramic views of Sariegos, León and the Bernesga Valley. In Carbajal de la Legua, the Ruta de los Miradores partly follows the same route as the Camino de San Salvador. There, the section of the Camino de San Salvador passes through beautiful oak and holm oak forests.

A small northern part of Monte San Isidro lies within the municipality of Sariegos. In the surrounding area, Monte San Isidro is used by the people of León and the nearby towns as a recreational area and for observing nature.

History and Culture

A Roman aqueduct is located in the municipality of Sariegos, in Carbajal de la Legua, at the Paraje de La Griega. Only a few remains of the Benedictine monastery of Santa María de Carbajal, which had been in operation since the 16th century, have also survived there.

La Pontona crosses the Bernesga dam. At the entrance to Sariegos, it is also a medieval bridge that may once have served local residents as a crossing towards León. Near the CL-623, La Pontona can be seen opposite the access to the Pasarela de Sariegos; however, it is difficult to reach and cannot be used due to its condition.

About 500 metres from Sariegos, in the area known as El Castillo, there is a Roman camp that was initially dated to the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. A church in Sariegos was built in 1746. The bell tower of a church in Sariegos is used by storks for nesting. In addition, Sariegos maintains the Mayos tradition as an established, recurring spring custom.
