Rublacedo de Abajo: Ruta del Agua, Cycling Routes and Culture

Rublacedo de Abajo combines visible traces of a former castle with paths through forest, ravines and named landscape areas. The tower of today's Iglesia de San Andrés was built using remains of the former castle; the battlements and several loopholes have been preserved. Local history and varied routes thus come together within a compact geographical setting.

Culture

The Iglesia de San Andrés, with its tower, represents the historical side of Rublacedo de Abajo. In the wider regional area, the Parque Arqueológico de Atapuerca archaeological park, the CAREX Centro De Arqueología Experimental museum, the Puente Románico de Agés historic site and the Monasterio de San Juan de Ortega monastery complement the cultural offerings. The Mirador viewpoint is also located there. These destinations bring together archaeology, historic architecture, monastic history and views of the landscape.

Hiking and Landscape

Near Rublacedo de Abajo, the Ruta del Agua follows a path parallel to the Río Zorita; the two Rublacedos are two kilometres apart. On the descent to Rublacedo de Abajo, the route passes through a small forest and a ravine landscape shaped by clay.

Another hiking description leads through the barren landscapes of the Páramo de los Rublacedos. The descent to Rublacedo de Abajo runs along the large ravine of the Arroyo de Fuenterrebiel stream. Forest, clay-shaped ravines, barren páramo terrain and the large ravine create different landscape views along the described routes.

In the wider regional area of Rublacedo de Abajo lies the Playa fluvial Fuente del Prior river beach. Manantial de Torreros is also located in the surrounding area; the Fuente Hontalvilla spring lies in the wider regional area. Thus, alongside the ravines and the páramo, a river beach and two named springs are also part of the region's landscape features.

Cycling

The main route of the Rublacedo cycling tour passes through Rublacedo de Abajo. It is 93 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 1,100 metres. These two figures define the tour as a clearly specified route with its own distance and elevation-gain details.

The Tobes y Rahedo route passes through Rublacedo de Arriba and Rublacedo de Abajo, as well as through the Valle de las Navas and Los Rublacedos. Compared with the individual cycling tour, the focus here is on the route through several named places and landscape areas.

The two cycling options therefore differ in their public descriptions: the Rublacedo cycling tour is defined by a specific total distance and stated elevation gain, while Tobes y Rahedo is identified primarily by the places and landscape areas it passes through. For personal planning, the route profile and geographical course can thus be considered separately, without equating the two routes or mixing their details.
