Las Quintanillas – Vía Aquitania, Churches and Folklore

Las Quintanillas combines the Vía Aquitania with churches, local history and folklore. Between route sections, religious buildings and regional traditions, a multifaceted picture of the town emerges.

Routes

From Las Quintanillas towards Villanueva de Argaño, there are two options on the Vía Aquitania: a route parallel to the N-120 along the original Calzada Original trail, or an interesting detour via Palacios de Benaver. The original route of the Vía Aquitania through Las Quintanillas is 13.99 km long in total. Another route passes the Ermita de San Bartolomé de Pedrosa de Río Úrbel and then reaches Las Quintanillas. Access to Las Quintanillas via the N-120 runs along the left shoulder, as there is no path there. The different routes and their total lengths can be compared in terms of route and scope.

Culture

In the Barrio Mayor, the parish church of Las Quintanillas stands on a small hill. The church is a Gothic temple with a tower and a Neoclassical portal from the 18th century. The Iglesia de San Facundo y San Primitivo was built in the Gothic style in the 14th and 15th centuries. The Ermita de la Virgen de la Expectación is also known as the Ermita de la Virgen de la O. Its origins date back to the 10th and 11th centuries; later work was carried out in the 15th century, and it was restored in the mid-20th century. On the outskirts of Las Quintanillas along the N-120 lies the Ermita, which serves as a landmark for travelers and pilgrims in the surrounding area.

Folklore

The Tierra Noble group was founded by numerous people from Las Quintanillas to preserve the folklore and traditions of the villages in their region. Las Quintanillas hosted the XI Muestra de Folklore “Camino de Santiago”, organized by the local Tierra Noble group. Groups from Burgos and the Asociación Folklórica “Os Ventos de Comesaña” from Vigo in the province of Pontevedra performed together at the event. The local folklore event of the Tierra Noble de Las Quintanillas dance group has become established year after year; numerous groups from other provinces took part.

History

Las Quintanillas initially belonged to the territories of Urbel and Burgos. In the last third of the 11th century, the town, along with 42 other settlements, came under the administration of the Alfoz of Muñó.

Nature

In the village of Villarmentero, which belongs to the municipality of Las Quintanillas, the Church of San Esteban Protomártir is dedicated to Saint Stephen the Protomartyr. The surroundings of Villarmentero, characterized by rivers and streams, are suitable for outdoor activities such as hiking and birdwatching. A visit to the Iglesia de San Esteban is estimated to take 30 minutes and is free of charge.
