Arija at the Ebro Reservoir: Holiday Apartment Between Water, Culture and Trails

Culture and History

The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Arija is a Neoclassical building made of local brown ashlar stone. It has Baroque Solomonic altarpieces with religious depictions and reliefs. The Museo Etnográfico Agrícola y Ganadero de Arija is an open-air museum with traditional agricultural and livestock-farming machinery and tools.

The Barrio de Vilga was established in 1906 with the settlement of Cristalería Española. It preserves its original layout and part of Arija’s industrial architectural heritage. The former schools of Cristalería Española document the town’s industrial and educational development at the beginning of the 20th century. They preserve architectural elements that reveal their historical significance.

The Escuelas de León de Argüeso in Arija were known as the Preceptoría de Latín; their building is located in the upper quarter of Arija. The Escuelas owe their origins to León de Argüeso’s financing of a college in Arija. Cristalería Española was Spain’s first manufacturer of polished flat glass. A monument honouring Arsenio Brachotte y Leroy, the first director of Cristalería Española, stands in the town. The monument was created by the sculptor Victorio Macho.

Trails and Activities

The Santelices–Arija stage of the Camino Olvidado is 25.8 kilometres long. The Playa de Arija mountain-bike route starts at the car park at Puntal de Arija. The PRC-BU 30 Ruta del Bosque Hijedo is a signposted short hiking trail with white-and-yellow markings. Along this route stands an unusual group of buildings from the early 20th century, consisting of a residential house, an outbuilding and a chapel arranged around a courtyard with a yew tree.
