Estépar: Church, History and Festivals

The church of La Natividad de María is the parish church of Estépar. Its construction combines two naves with a rectangular tower on the western side. Inside, the church preserves several altarpieces from the last third of the 18th century. The main altar is in the Rococo style and was created in 1785. The central niche contains a Gothic image of the Virgin Mary under the title Nuestra Señora de la Estepa. Thus, a single church building brings together different architectural and decorative features: the two-nave layout, the rectangular western tower, the altarpieces from the late 18th century, the Rococo altar and the Gothic image of the Virgin Mary.

These features can be considered individually during a visit. The structure describes the external layout of the parish church, while the altarpieces, main altar and image of the Virgin Mary characterize the interior furnishings. Estépar therefore presents a clearly distinguishable combination of architecture, Rococo and Gothic imagery.

History

A document dated 1185 records that Estépar belonged to the territory of Muñó. A privilege granted on 1 June 1187 transferred the Dehesa of Monte de Estépar to the Real Monasterio de las Huelgas. Through this donation, Estépar was incorporated into the seigneurial domain of the Real Monasterio de las Huelgas and placed under the jurisdiction of its abbess.

A ruling dated 22 October 1529 found in favor of the abbess and the representatives of Estépar's municipal council. In the first third of the 16th century, Juan de Santo Domingo was the first lord of Estépar and Frandovínez. The “Mayorazgo de Estépar” was founded in 1565. These dates do not trace a single period, but rather several stages: belonging to Muñó, the transfer of the Dehesa, the legal decision of 1529 and the later foundation of the Mayorazgo.

Leisure

Estépar's outdoor frontón court has artificial lighting and a concrete surface. It is located on C/ Las Bodegas. Estépar's municipal swimming pools are intended for swimming. They are located at Camino de las bodegas s/n. The frontón court and swimming pools therefore represent two clearly distinct leisure facilities: the former is described by its lighting, surface and location, while the latter is described by its intended use and separate address.

When planning a day in Estépar, the two locations can be noted separately: C/ Las Bodegas for the outdoor frontón court and Camino de las bodegas s/n for the municipal swimming pools. Their respective features also remain distinct, since the lighting and concrete surface belong to the frontón court, while the swimming pools are expressly intended for swimming.

Festivals

Estépar's patron saint festivals are held in honor of the Virgen de la Estepa. The celebration of Natividad de Ntra. Señora is associated with the first weekend of September and 8 September. The calendar therefore contains two specified time references: the first weekend of September and the fixed date of 8 September. Both details belong to the celebration of Natividad de Ntra. Señora and can be considered separately when planning the timing of a trip.

Location

Estépar lies on the right bank of the Río Arlanzón. Its riverside location adds a geographical context to the town's history, church, leisure facilities and patron saint festivals.
