Meis: Monasteries, Mills and Trails

The PR-G 170 Ruta da Pedra e da Auga begins in the municipality of Meis and runs downhill along a narrow path parallel to the Armenteira River; some sections of this path are difficult.

Culture

The Monastery of Armenteira is first mentioned by name in 1162. This mention is found in official documents of the Cistercian Order.

The Capela de Mosteiro is a Romanesque chapel. An inscription on the triumphal arch gives 1150 as the year of construction.

Initially, the Capela de Mosteiro belonged to a Benedictine monastery. From the 16th century onwards, it belonged to the Order of the Knights Hospitaller.

The Igrexa de San Martiño de Meis is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. The main portal and the walls of the nave have survived from this period.

There are baldachins on the atrium wall of the Igrexa de San Martiño de Meis. They date from the 15th century and enclose a fountain.

Cycle Routes

A mountain-bike centre is planned in Meis, from which cycling tours can be organised.

For route selection, the Monte da Escusa cycling route is described as having a low level of difficulty. The route offers views of the Rías de Pontevedra and de Arousa.

The PR-G 171 Ruta do Río San Martiño runs along the slope of Monte A Escusa. The Ría de Arousa can be seen from this slope.

The final section of the PR-G 171 Ruta do Río San Martiño runs through Albariño vineyards and maize fields.

The PR-G 172 Ruta do Río Chanca follows the Chanca River uphill to the A Armenteira monastery. Its final section leads to the lands of the A Armenteira monastery and onwards to the town centre.

Nature

The Fervenzas do Rego da Armenteira route includes a lower group of mills. The mills of Barrantes belong to this group. The mills of Serén form an upper group.

The Fervenza de Arcos can be reached from the recreation area by descending to the river.

In San Tomé de Nogueira, the Fervenza de Arcos consists of several low cascades. These cascades lie over granite rocks.

The Fervenza do Rego de San Salvador is located next to a mill. The mill is situated on the San Martiño stream.

The scenery alternates between the Armenteira River, the slopes of Monte A Escusa, the Albariño vineyards and the mills along the watercourses; each appears as part of the routes and places mentioned.

Orientation

The cloister of the Monasterio Cisterciense de Armenteira is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. In winter, opening hours extend until the end of daylight.
