Holiday apartment in Albarellos – Discover cultural heritage and landscapes

Albarellos combines sacred architecture with a landscape between a mountain range and a riverbank. The parish church of Santa María de Albarellos is located in Lugar de Albarellos; Casa de Albarellos and the wayside cross complete the architectural focal points. Arable farming and beekeeping were also among the village’s former livelihoods.

Santa María and the architectural heritage

The Igrexa de Albarellos (Parroquial de Santa María) is associated with architectural heritage and integral protection. The church building therefore forms the sacred focal point among Albarellos’s structures. Santa María thus connects the specific church building with a historical ecclesiastical classification.

Historically, the parish church of Santa María de Albarellos was an annex of the church of Sotolongo within the Beade commandery. This historical annex relationship links Santa María to the ecclesiastical order in which it was administered. Its former affiliation with Sotolongo and the Beade commandery extends this context beyond the individual church site.

Casa de Albarellos was also associated with the architectural heritage in 2024. Together with Santa María, the building is therefore one of the village’s cultural and historical points of reference.

The wayside cross of Albarellos is dated to 1996. The year 1996 gives the wayside cross an independent chronological reference within the village’s history.

Landscape and historical livelihoods

Albarellos lies near a mountain range that separates drainage basins and on the left bank of a river.

Historically, the terrain of Albarellos was mountainous. Of a total of 2,000 ferrados, 300 ferrados could be used for agriculture. The usable area therefore accounted for only a limited part of the total terrain. The ratio of total area to usable area describes a clearly limited space for historical arable farming. The historical usable area thus amounted to 300 of a total of 2,000 ferrados and related to the mountainous terrain of Albarellos.

Historically, rye, coarse millet, oats, flax, potatoes, turnips, as well as some vegetables and fruit were produced in Albarellos. In addition, Albarellos historically had 600 beehives. Alongside grains and field crops, flax, horticulture and beekeeping were therefore also part of the former economic practices. The former economy in Albarellos was thus not limited to a single focus: grains, field crops, horticulture and beekeeping existed side by side. Production consequently included grains, fiber crops, vegetables, fruit and, in addition, beekeeping.

Landscape views and local history

The Outeiro de Albarellos is proposed as a viewing point. The proposal adds a distinct landscape accent alongside the buildings of Santa María, Casa de Albarellos and the wayside cross. Its planned status remains distinct from the village’s other structures. The proposed viewing point therefore remains separate from the sacred architectural heritage and the village’s other buildings.

In 2000, local residents were preparing the entrance to Albarellos and the church of Santa María de Albarellos. The local initiative thus included both the village entrance and the church building. The work therefore concerned not only a single building but also the village entrance.
