Hiking Trails and Landscape

The Ruta da Cidade Castrexa das Grades passes through the parishes of Petán, Achas and A Cañiza. This 9.25-kilometre circular hiking route follows the Deva River and smaller streams along several sections. The Sendero de las Fragas y Levadas del río Calvo y del Deva is an 18-kilometre circular hiking route through the valley of Parada de Achas, with forests, mid-mountain landscapes and the Calvo and Deva rivers. This trail includes a 6.2-kilometre branch to Coto da Vella with wide-ranging views.

The Ruta de Fontefría passes through flat, wet terrain with seasonal lagoons and several peat bogs. It is 7.7 kilometres long, starts at an elevation of 790 metres and passes several megalithic burial mounds known as Mámoas. The Ruta de Luneda leads to numerous natural viewpoints in the highlands of A Paradanta, an area of high landscape and cultural value in A Cañiza.

A Cañiza is a mid-mountain region with a varied landscape suitable for hiking and nature activities. Coto da Vella lies at an elevation of 940 metres in the Sierra de A Paradanta and offers views of A Peneda in Portugal. The Mirador de Monte Lapido offers views across the Ribadil Valley, the Miño River and as far as the mountains of northern Portugal.

Nature and Night Sky

The Mirador de Montouto is recognised as a Starlight Park. It is used for observing the night sky, astronomy education, and cultural, educational and tourism activities centred on the firmament.

Praia Fluvial de Luneda is a natural riverside recreation area located on the Regueira del Aceval stream in Gonda, a tributary of the Deva River, with a picnic area, barbecue facilities and a children's play area. The Piscina Municipal de As Grades outdoor swimming pool was scheduled to open to the public from 1 July to 15 September, weather permitting.

Culture and Trail Traditions

The Casa Museo Diego de Giráldez presents a monographic exhibition of works by the painter Diego de Giráldez, who was born in A Cañiza. The parish church of A Cañiza was built between 1856 and 1884 and has three naves.

The seventh stage of the Vía Mariana begins in El Feirón, passes through the parish church of Santiago de Parada and ends at the Santuario de la Franqueira.

Regional Traditions

The Feria del Jamón takes place on 15 August in the centuries-old Carballeira del Cacharado. Cocido Cañicense is a local culinary tradition that brings people together to celebrate and share a meal, attracting visitors to A Cañiza.
