In Xunqueira de Espadanedo, the Monastery of Santa María de Xunqueira de Espadanedo combines with a pottery tradition that continues to this day and trails through the countryside. The monastery is located in the centre of the village on the OU-536 road and has been documented since 1174. Its church retains a medieval basilica plan with three naves and semicircular apses. The monastery also includes the cloister of the canons regular, which was rebuilt in the modern period between the 16th and 18th centuries. The same monastery therefore preserves architectural forms from the Middle Ages alongside a later reconstruction of the cloister.

Culture

A distinctive cultural feature can be found in the village of Niñodaguia, which belongs to the municipality of Xunqueira de Espadanedo. Traditional pottery continues there under the local name “Olería”. In this production, the “orella de boi” glaze provides the finishing touch. It is also regarded as a defining feature of local identity and as a seal of authenticity for the area’s traditional production. The local name and the special glaze therefore belong to the same traditional pottery-making heritage in Niñodaguia.

Two restored “casiñas da neve” remain in Xunqueira de Espadanedo. These surviving buildings are snow houses. The two structures therefore stand as distinct surviving examples alongside the monastery and the pottery tradition.

Traditions

The Encontro de Cacharreiros takes place every year in the village of Niñodaguia. Sábado Longo is another vibrant ethnographic tradition there, passed down through the generations. Sábado Longo is organised as a participatory community festival by the Asociación Cultural Os Xuncos. Thus, the village combines an annual gathering with a festival passed down through the generations, organised by the aforementioned cultural association.

Trails and Landscape

O Faladoiro de Frei Martín is a sculpture on a natural balcony overlooking the Cistercian Monastery of Santa María de Xunqueira de Espadanedo. The municipality has designated and digitised hiking trails. They are intended for people of different ages and with different profiles. The trails are therefore defined both by their designation and by their digital mapping, while the viewpoint, as a sculpture on a natural balcony, faces the monastery.

For cycle tourism, old paths were restored and converted into hiking trails. The Campo do Eirado viewpoint is located next to the wooden launch ramp of the downhill course.

Serra do Rodicio

The Serra do Rodicio flying zone has an official paragliding launch site on the slope of Rodicio. Tandem flights with experienced pilots who visit the area are also available in the Serra do Rodicio area. The official launch site is located on the slope of Rodicio, while the tandem flights in the Serra do Rodicio area are conducted with experienced pilots.
