O Pereiro De Aguiar: Mill Route, Reservoir and Church

The “Os muíños do río Loña” route in O Pereiro De Aguiar offers a short, 11-kilometre circular route and a longer, 15-kilometre variant with a turn-off to the recreational area.

The route provides insights into the hidden hydraulic engineering behind the small mills along its course. Along the route, visitors can discover riverside woodland and the typical fauna of the Río Loña, as well as the mountain landscape of the Chaira from several viewpoints in the mountains.

Nature

The recreational area at the Encoro de Cachamuíña reservoir has improved pedestrian access, distinctive wooden walkways for crossing both riverbanks and various sports facilities.

The walking path around the Encoro de Cachamuíña reservoir follows a level route through Atlantic and Mediterranean vegetation. Reptiles and mammals, as well as resident birds and migratory birds stopping over, can be found in the area around the path.

Landscape

The “Sicenata – Castelo de Parada” route runs along the bank of the Río Miño in the northern part of the municipality and includes nearby viewpoints in a particularly distinctive natural landscape.

Restored traditional paths improve access there to one of the most significant epigraphic complexes on the Iberian Peninsula.

The Miradoiro do Castelo de Parada viewpoint is located on a rocky elevation at 427.6 metres above sea level and offers panoramic views over the Río Miño valley.

In the nearby area, the “dos picos de Covas e Triós” route borders the municipality of Esgos and forms part of the cultural landscape associated with the Monastery of San Pedro de Rocas.

Culture

The Pazo de Casdemiro is located in the village of Casdemiro, in the parish of Santa María de Melias, and can be reached via the N-120 road from Ourense to Ponferrada.

The village of Lamela is home to O Pazo de Casa Blanca and A Torre Lamela, which are considered two of the finest examples of aristocratic civil architecture in the province of Ourense.

The Iglesia de San Juan de Moreiras is a parish church dating from the second half of the 12th century, probably from its final years, and is considered the oldest church in the municipality.

It has a single-nave layout and a semicircular apse. The main portal, which opens to the west, has round-arched archivolts, a plain tympanum and columns with simple capitals.

The Iglesia de San Juan de Moreiras houses a silver processional cross from the late 17th century.

History

Cachamuíña was the birthplace and place of death of Bernardo González del Valle, who was known by the name Cachamuíña. In 1809, he brought down the Porta de Gamboa in Vigo and recaptured the square, which was occupied by the French at the time.
