Discover Verín: Entroido, springs and historic buildings

The Entroido de Verín is classified as a festival of national tourist interest. Verín lies in a fertile valley irrigated by the Támega River. The town is also located in an area with the highest concentration of mineral-medicinal springs in Galicia. Verín is a crossroads of pilgrimage routes to Santiago that come via the Vía da Prata or from Portugal.

Culture

The Cigarróns are the main figures of the Entroido de Verín. On Domingo Corredoiro, the Sunday before Entroido, the Cigarróns appear in Verín after the morning Masses. The Entroido de Verín includes Xoves de Comadres and Xoves de Compadres, celebrations shaped by women and men. On Luns de Entroido, a flour fight takes place in Verín. On 17 January, the Festa do Chourizo is celebrated in Ábedes (Verín); around sunset, the Cigarrón mask appears there for the first time that year.

History

The Igrexa de Santa María a Maior houses the Cristo das Batallas, which is probably attributed to Gregorio Fernández or Martínez Montañés. The church is located in Verín’s old town on Rúa Maior and can be reached on foot from Praza García Barbón.

The Igrexa da Mercede houses a Baroque altarpiece. The church is located in Verín’s old town at Praza da Mercé. It can be accessed via Avenida Luís Espada and via Rúa da Cruz and Amaro Refoxo.

The Capela de San Antón has a rectangular floor plan and Roman ashlar stones. It includes Romanesque elements as well as an extension from the 18th century. The current building complex of the Convento Padres Mercedarios dates largely from the 18th century. The Convento Padres Mercedarios is listed as having been built in 1738.

The Edificio Modernista is a modernist building opposite Casa dos Acevedo. Its façade combines stone and glass. It has galleries and richly decorated stone ornaments. The tower is crowned by a dome. A prior appointment with the owners is required to visit the Edificio Modernista.

Casa dos Acevedo is a house of historical and artistic significance on Plaza García Barbón in Verín. The house is built of stone. Its portal has three round arches. There are two balconies on the upper floor, with a coat of arms between them.

Nature

A Braña is a recreational area in the parish of Cabreiroá (San Salvador) in Verín. In Cabreiroá, a spring is located a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Verín, in an extensive park with large trees of various native species.
