Churches, Chapels and Religious Art

The Capilla de la Virgen Aparecida is associated with San Andrés de Porqueirós in Muíños. The Igrexa de San Andrés de Porqueirós has a rectangular floor plan with a raised presbytery. The presbytery is the liturgical area of a church; in San Andrés, it is elevated above the rest of the building. The rectangular floor plan describes the external form, while the raised position of the presbytery complements the internal liturgical layout. Inside, there is a tabernacle featuring the theological virtues, as well as images of Saint Andrew, Saint Blaise, Saint Anthony and the Immaculate Conception. The theological virtues form a separate motif alongside the specifically named images of the saints. The Capela da Aparecida in Porqueirós contains a Baroque altarpiece. An altarpiece is a designed structure behind the altar, here executed in the Baroque style. The two sacred sites therefore emphasize different aspects: in San Andrés, the floor plan, presbytery and several artworks shape the space, while in the Capela, the focus is on the altarpiece.

Pilgrimages Throughout the Year

A pilgrimage to the Aparecida in Porqueirós takes place in August; in addition, a winter Aparecida pilgrimage on the Saturday before Carnival Sunday has been recorded for the area. At the Fonte da Santa, a traditional practice involves washing, leaving coins at the bottom of the fountain and returning to this holy site within a year. The fountain is therefore a separate religious point of reference alongside the Aparecida pilgrimage.

The Camino de las Ferias

The Camino de las Ferias adds a clearly defined hiking element to travel planning. After three kilometres, the Camino de las Ferias reaches the village of Porqueirós. Along the Camino de las Ferias, visitors can see the Ermita de la Aparecida in Porqueirós. The route is 25 kilometres long and takes seven hours. Its classification as a route with a high level of difficulty identifies the entire trail as a long and demanding hike. The three kilometres refer to the section leading to the village, not to the total length of the route. The destination reached, the full distance, the stated duration and the high level of difficulty are therefore all relevant when assessing the trail.
