Larouco – Winegrowing, Cultural Heritage and Landscape

The Ruta dos Lagares e Via Romana in Larouco is 4.8 km long and includes an 850 m detour in one direction to Lagar As Pedreiras. The detour and the main route connect the historic route with Lagar de As Pedreiras. Lagar de As Pedreiras is also part of the Ruta Romana do Viño. Cultural Heritage

The ensemble of the cave wine cellars of Seadur in Larouco has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural). The Igrexa Parroquial de Santa María de Larouco is a religious heritage church in Larouco.

At Castro de O Castrillón, there is a signposted visitor trail and several information boards. Castro de O Castrillón is a pre-Roman settlement that is more than 2,000 years old. For signposted trails, it is advisable to check current route conditions before travelling.

Buildings

The main building of Casa Grande de Freixido covers 815 m² over two floors. Casa Grande de Freixido is a 17th-century building completely surrounded by a wall of rubble stone.

Landscape

The southern part of Larouco lies within the “Macizo Central” SAC area of the Natura 2000 network. A route from Miradoiro da Antiga leads to Lombo da Antiga. Lombo da Antiga offers views over the gorge of the River Bibei. The hill of O Castrillón offers panoramic views between the Bibei and Xares rivers.

In Larouco, a preserved section of the Roman Via Nova, also known as Via XVIII, that follows a zigzag course is called Codos de Larouco.

Festivals

The Santa Mariña festival is celebrated in Seadur in July. The Santa Bárbara festival is celebrated in Freixido in August. The Nosa Señora dos Remedios festival is celebrated in Larouco in September. For festivals held on fixed dates, preparations depend on the relevant month or Holy Saturday.

At the As Covas de Seadur celebration, which takes place every Holy Saturday, visitors can tour more than 20 traditional wine cellars. The Ruta das Covas de Seadur takes place every year as an oenological event with tastings and guided tours through the caves. For events with tastings, it is worth checking the current date and the announced programme.

Wine and Regional Cuisine

The ethnographic setting of Covas de Seadur includes 40 traditional wine cellars of great cultural value. Some of the caves of Covas de Seadur have been restored and converted into tourist attractions offering oenological experiences.

At an event in the municipality, participants can taste wines from the region as well as dishes featuring lamb, Bica and chestnuts. The vineyards of Larouco are considered an important part of the wine production of D.O. Valdeorras. The rock wine press Lagar Rupestre As Pedreiras bears witness to the former importance of winegrowing in Larouco.
