History

The church in Casaio has an interesting altarpiece. During the Second World War, 463 Republican prisoners worked in the Valborraz mines. The “pista de los alemanes” was built in 1940 to allow cars and trucks access to the Valborraz mining area. Much of it is still preserved and in good condition. The OU-122 branches off from Sobradelo towards Casaio.

The mining history thus links the work in the Valborraz mines with a surviving transport route dating from 1940. The historical connection remains legible at several specific locations: the mines, the track built for cars and trucks, and the access road leading from Sobradelo towards Casaio.

Culture

At the entrance to the cemetery, remains of the Plateresque façade of Casaio’s former church can still be seen today. The Ermita de San Xil is located in the Casaio valley. It preserves the memory of a 12th-century Benedictine monk who withdrew into these mountains as a hermit.

San Xil thus connects the location in the valley with the memory of the Benedictine monk and his retreat into the mountains as a hermit. The schematic rock paintings in Pala de Cabras are located in Casaio’s communal lands. They are dated approximately to 2500 BC.

The San Xil festival in Casaio takes place every year on 1 May in the chapel dedicated to the saint, next to the river of the same name. Local culture therefore includes both architectural testimonies at the church and cemetery and the chapel by the river, the memory of San Xil, and the significantly older rock art of Pala de Cabras.
