Discover Frontón: Holiday Apartments, Culture and Historic Trails

Culture

The hórreo in Frontón is dated to 1904. The Igrexa Parroquial de San Xoán de Frontón is located on the Camino de Invierno. The Capela da Chaira is also located on the Camino de Invierno and was built in the 20th century.

The Camino de Invierno therefore brings together two religious buildings from different periods. The hórreo adds another structure to these historical testimonies, one whose dating goes back to 1904.

Landscape

The A Cruz viewpoint offers views of the Sil basin. The field of vision also includes the areas of Lugo and Ourense. At A Cruz, a stone cross commemorates a mission that took place in the parish of Pombeiro in the first half of the 20th century.

At the same location, landscape and memory stand directly alongside one another: The Sil basin and the areas of Lugo and Ourense form part of the view, while the stone cross refers to an event in the parish of Pombeiro.

Historic Trails

The Camiño da Ribeira begins at a house known as Casa do Cura de Frontón. The trail passes through a chestnut forest. It leads past Pena da Coceira. Cova da Moura is located there.

Its route thus connects several clearly named points: the starting point at Casa do Cura de Frontón, the chestnut forest, Pena da Coceira and Cova da Moura, located there.

Historically, the inhabitants of San Román, Lornís, Seragude, Frontón and Budián used the Camiño da Ribeira. They used the trail to transport grain by mule to the mills on the Erbededo stream. The stream lies below Frontón.

The historic purpose of the trail is therefore just as specific as its route. Both the five places whose inhabitants used it at the time and the transported goods, the mills and the Erbededo stream below Frontón are named.

The Camiño da Amieira leads to vineyards. These are located on the banks of the Cabe.

Further destinations: A Ermida, Meirengos, Guitiriz, Cervo, Baleira, Chavín, Carballedo and Bóveda.

Architecture

A Chaira was established as a settlement in the parish of Frontón to accommodate some of the workers involved in constructing the Santo Estevo reservoir. The workers' houses in A Chaira are rectangular. Their materials include, among others, granite ashlar, slate and slate rock. The streets of A Chaira converge on the forecourt of the centrally located church. This forecourt forms a central social space.

The creation of A Chaira is therefore connected with the construction of the Santo Estevo reservoir. This history is also reflected spatially in the layout of the settlement: The streets lead to the forecourt of the centrally located church, while the rectangular workers' houses are characterised by granite ashlar, slate and slate rock. The forecourt forms the settlement's central social space.
