The Gran Prix de Carrilanas de Esteiro originated in 1988 from a local discussion about reviving the festivities in honour of Santa Mariña de Esteiro. At the Gran Prix, the Carrilanas tradition is considered a gravity sport; mechanical innovations and imaginative designs play an important role.

Carrilanas are wooden vehicles with wooden wheels covered in rubber. On slopes, these vehicles travel downhill under the force of gravity. The carpenters of Esteiro are described as the actual inspiration for the Carrilanas event.
