Praia de Chamoso is a rocky beach with white sand and calm waters. A Madalena Beach is just over one kilometre long. To the east of A Madalena Beach lies the Piñeiral da Madalena, which covers nine hectares. Wooden walkways cross the Piñeiral da Madalena, making it easier to get around and limiting the impact of human use on the environment.
Coast and nature
Praia do Río Castro lies at the mouth of the Río Castro, which is also known as Ventín, Dana and Regato de Laraxe. Praia do Río Castro has calm waters, dark sand and pebbles; it lies on the boundary between the municipalities of Cabanas and Fene. Cabanas is part of the Parque Natural das Fragas do Eume. Soaserra, Salto and Irís are designated natural access points.
Hiking trails
The A Madalena–Chamoso circular trail is 4.12 km long and takes approximately 55 minutes. The Sendeiro da Costa begins at the cliff at the northern end of A Madalena Beach. The A auga (Maré-Cabada-Batán) circular trail is approximately 7.9 km long. For 3.4 km, the A auga (Maré-Cabada-Batán) trail follows the channel of the Río Castro. From sections at higher elevations, it offers sea views.
The circular trail from Soaserra to Caaveiro runs through the Fraga and partly along the banks of the Río Eume to the Mosteiro de Caaveiro. Thus, the trails described extend from the coastal area through the channel of the Río Castro to the banks of the Río Eume and through the Fraga.
Culture and history
The Pazo de Riobóo was built in the second half of the 17th century. The Pazo de Riobóo has a Baroque portal. Its northern façade features a coat of arms dated to the period between 1742 and 1748. Cabanas has several buildings of Indian architecture, which were promoted by Galician emigration in the early years of the 20th century.
The English Way to Santiago crosses Cabanas on its second stage between Neda and Pontedeume. Within Cabanas, the English Way begins in the parish of Laraxe and leads towards Pontedeume via the Ponte dos Andrade.
In Cabanas, the festivities are organised by the municipality and celebrated every year on the weekend during which 29 July falls. One celebration takes place in the Piñeiral da Madalena on the Sunday of the festivities.
