Talarrubias: Santa Catalina, Puerto Peña and Birding

Talarrubias: The parish church of Santa Catalina de Alejandría dates from the 16th century and combines Gothic, Renaissance and Mudéjar styles.

Culture

It features a Gothic structural framework, Renaissance elements on corbels, cornice supports and buttresses, as well as Mudéjar elements on the alfiz frames and the tower. Casa del Patio was formerly a Franciscan monastery before the friars were transferred to the Royal Monastery of Guadalupe; as a Baroque building, its ornamental design is concentrated on the portal. The Capilla del Carmen was built in 1792 as the chapel of the adjoining hospital. Fuente Trifón is a late-medieval fountain with a vaulted structure made of slate and brick, as well as a spring inside.

Since 2004, the Los Rincones festival has been held, opening up historic and everyday spaces for exhibitions, music, theatre and dance. During the patron-saint festivities in Talarrubias, various orchestras perform every night from the 23rd to the 27th until dawn in the village square.

Nature

At Puerto Peña, the La Gran Muralla rock face is home to the largest colony of griffon vultures in the province of Badajoz.

Hiking and Birdwatching

Stage 21 of the Camino Natural del Guadiana ends at Playa de Puerto Peña, which has infrastructure for bathers, a landing stage and a leisure centre with a café, toilets and picnic areas. Puerto Peña is suitable for cycling, climbing, fishing, hiking and canoeing.

The viewpoint of the Centro de Interpretación de la Fauna Rupícola de Puerto Peña is located in Talarrubias next to the Puerto Peña campsite; access is via a turn-off from the N-430 near the García de Sola reservoir.
